facebook.comJournalist, Theresa Bowyer (nee Ogunbiyi) as a war correspondent on the front-line, during the Nigerian Civil War (c.1968). Before this, she had maintained a forthright, radically out-spoken, feminist-oriented newspaper column, in the 1960's. Fair to say, she was as feminist as a female journalist could be, in the immediate post-colonial Nigeria. She joined the staff of Daily Times in 1951 and became the first female Editor of the grand old 'man' of Nigerian Newspaper publishing. As could be expected, her appointment was controversial, not just because she was a woman (as usual), but on account of her audacious and forthright journalism. Ogunbiyi, would speak her mind, as she saw fit, especially on issues surrounding women. This woman really couldn't give a toss about societal strictures. She could justly be regarded as the pioneer of a brand of journalism, which mantle was passed on to two generations of Nigerian female journalists after her. A true heroine, if there ever was one.
