MUST READ: IS UDOM STILL CORRECT FOR AKWA-IBOM BANKERS? By Marie Bassey Akwa-Ibom state’s banking community is made up of over 14 commercial banks with a significant sprinkling of microfinance and savings/loans banks. It can be safely deduced that the industry employs about 900 people, out of which 85-90% are indigenes of the state. It is a well-known fact that Bankers are assigned targets to measure their performance and contributions to their employers’ growth. While target achievements are usually celebrated with promotions and elevations, non-achievement of targets (also known as non-performance) leads to queries, cautions and in most cases, outright termination of employment. Previously, such targets where easily achieved in the state because of the magnanimity and ability of previous administrations to spread the state’s accounts, projects and other businesses among the different banks operating within the state. This of course made the industry highly competitive, and vibrant, as bankers became more innovative and knowledgeable in their quests to achieve their targets. High achievers were readily celebrated and promoted as at when due. As the saying goes, when a man is gainfully employed, the society and economy booms. Alas, this is no longer the situation of things in the state’s banking industry. Today, all Akwa-Ibom state businesses, projects, contracts up to the smallest amount, are being tied to just one bank which boasts of 10% or less of the total number of bankers in the state. This particular bank is the alma-mater of the current accountant-general of the state, commissioner of finance and even the state governor himself. Albeit, one can safely say that it is not a coincidence that all the state jobs are channeled to this same alma-mater bank. But knowing the pedigree of our governor, I would have expected him to show true equity and fairness in spreading across the state's businesses to accommodate all banks, as this will directly impact on most bankers. What they have succeeded in creating, is an industry where the less than 10% ex-colleagues of theirs are now elites of the industry who do not need to stress nor sweat towards achieving their targets. On the other hand, the remaining 80% who aren't lucky to be employees of this alma-mater group, are not only struggling to meet their targets (being that all award letters, advices now bear this single bank's name and can't be consummated at any other bank), but now work in perpetual fear of losing their jobs at any turn, due to non-performances. Correct me if am wrong here, are we not the people that appoint unto ourselves a person to lead us n protect our collective rights/goals? So why has this government decided to impoverish the majority of bankers in the state while elevating a selected few?? Where is the fairness and equity of which the state's ruling party is known for? I do not want to believe that the excellency is aware of this issue in the banking industry without correcting the anomaly, hence am writing this open letter to him. I hope no one is going to accuse me of taking this personally because frankly writing, it's personal to me and a lot more who recently lost their jobs under the guise of non-performance. Please share and pass this on till it gets to the attention of his Excellency Emmanuel Udom, the governor of Akwa Ibom state. He just has to be #correct to the Akwa-Ibom state Bankers. Kindly correct this anomaly in the industry urgently. I pray God will continually bless you with wisdom to lead this great state successfully in the 7 years to come. God bless Akwa-Abasi-Ibom State. Best Regards, Marie Bassey

At Last!! EFCC Officially Receives A Petition Against Jonathan The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has formally received a petition asking the agency to probe ex-President Goodluck Jonathan on the alleged mismanagement of Billions of Dollars that was released to the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) for arms purchase. The petition is also requesting the EFCC to invite Jonathan for interrogation on why he made N400m public funds available to a former National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Olisa Metuh, for personal and private party use. Details of the first petition the EFCC will formally receive demanding the investigation of Jonathan. According to findings, the petition dated May 24, 2016 came from a former member of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Ikenna Ejezie, through his counsel, Barrister Osuagwu Ugochukwu. Both President Muhammadu Buhari and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami, were copied the petition. The petition reads: “We are solicitors to Hon. Ikenna Ejezie hereinafter called our client and with you as he has instructed. “Our client is requesting you to, in the public interest, invite ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for questioning and possible prosecution over his role in the misuse of $2.1billion through the Office of the National Security Adviser (Col. Sambo Dasuki rtd) and disbursement of N400million funds to Olisa Metuh for personal and private political party use. “Our client notes that Dasuki had stated severally whilst in your commission that the $2.1b was authorized for disbursement by ex-Pres Jonathan for arms purchase, but later turned out to be for selfish purpose. “Olisa Metuh also had admitted that former President Jonathan transferred and/or authorized release of N400m public funds to his account for political campaign of Jonathan rather than for public interest. “Our client informed us that the confession of Olisa Metuh is contained in his criminal statement with the EFCC. Our client is thus shocked that in spite of the implication of ex-President Jonathan in the current prosecution of Metuh and Dasuki, the former President has not been invited for his statement to be taken nor has he been prosecuted by the EFCC as co-accused/defendant. “Our client herewith requests that the ex-President be invited for questioning and to commence prosecution as he was the one who did authorize the disbursement of the $2.1billion and N400million public funds that were illegally abused and misappropriated by Dasuki and Metuh who are both standing trial in various courts in Abuja. “Our client demands that this request be responded to within seven days from the receipt of this letter and as quickly as possible.”

I Will Never Forget What Goodluck Jonathan Did – Buhari PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has finally ruled-out possibility of inviting ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for questioning over cases of corruptions, most especially, the popular Armsgate scandal during his administration, saying the ex-President has earned respect world-over for a singular act after 2015 elections. Buhari who said he was shocked to have receive Jonathan’s call even before the presidential election result was declared also said such incidence in his life remain unforgettable. Reacting to questions when some journalists interview the President during the week, Buhari revealed that he remains grateful to the former President. Hear him: “I think is one of the incidences in my life that I will never forget, I could even remember the time, it is quarter past five in the evening. He call me, of course we recognize each other voices. He said, good evening Your Excellency and I say ha Good evening Your Excellency and then a temporary silence from both sides then I heard I am calling you to congratulate you that I have conceded, that you have won the election and congratulations. “And now of course, there was absolute silence from my own side, because I haven’t recovered from the shock, because the reality of the situation is for somebody who have been a deputy governor, a governor, a vice president and then a president suddenly for six years to concede during election even before the counting was completed I think he shows some great statesmanship. “So quickly, that is why I changed my mind I said Your Excellency, he said do you hear what I said thank you Your Excellency for your statesmanship. I think if you play back because it was recorded that is how I quickly came out of it. “And certainly for that he earned the respect not only of Nigerians, but the world over, because in the state of our development political, when change of government is done through the barrel of the gun. Then a substantive seating President conceding before even the figures are been collated

89% OF WOMEN WILL READ THIS !! Why Nigerian Women Will Dominate Politics, By Lagos Council Boss The Deputy Executive Secretary, Coker Aguda Local Council Development Area, Mrs Olatokunbo Ajala-Ekundayo, has urged Nigerian women to outgrow their aspiration in politics beyond the parish level to capture political power. Ajala-Ekundayo said that the Nigerian woman could capture power beyond the local level within a short time if they played active politics at the national and municipal levels. She said:: ``The argument that many women are not in politics is not sustainable going by their numbers at political rallies and campaigns. ``Women possess the numerical strength to take charge of public affairs but unfortunately we are still too involved in politics at the parish and community level. ``If more of us can grow beyond the local government terrain in our political aspirations, capturing federal political power by one of us is assured in a short time,’’ she said. Ajala-Ekundayo said that market women alone constituted a potent force that could be a catalyst to wrest political power from the menfolk if they organized themselves more constructively. ``Women constitute an appreciable number of the educated class in this country and the electorate and therefore can use the potential power to change fortunes in the society. ``The proper and constructive organisation of women in our society from all walks of life, including the market women, will produce nothing short of relevance in politics for us,’’ she said. On the tenure of elected local government councils in Lagos State, Ajala-Ekundayo said three years was not enough for elected local officials to achieve their set objectives and programmes. She added that the proposal would have undergone extensive deliberation before it was allowed to become part of the public discourse. ``Experience has taught many of us at the local level that three years is not enough to attain our manifesto promises considering the challenge of finance and the Lagos peculiarity. ``Local leaders too need more time as well to be able to affect and change lives of citizens they govern,’’ she told NAN. GAjala-Ekunday also urged state governments to allocate more revenues to local councils to enable them to influence social change especially in the education and health sectors.
