This is due to the persistent and dangerous gas flares being unleashed by PLATFORM PETROLEUM LIMITED on the said community year in year out. A visit to these communities shows a serious impact on both the living and non living components of the environment due to massive air pollution. These impacts include weathering of the building walls, changes in the colours of roofing sheets, leakages of roof tops cracks on the walls and suspension in the source of their drinking waters, Individuals are not left out as chronic health diseases such as cough, acute respiratory problems like asthma and poor sight are daily occurence. LIKE OGONI, LIKE EBEDEI Though no noticeable oil spillage, unprecedented air pollution of epic proportion greets you the moment you step your feet on EBEDEI. Heat wave is constant through out the day as both young and old finds it difficult to sleep at night. Analyst say that billions of dollars will be required to bring back the balanced ecosystem the communities enjoy before the advent of oil and gas exploration by PPL.. Yields from the farms have taken a dangerous turn as hunger and starvation now steer on the faces of locals. This was a community once known for massive producer of yams, cassava, plantain, melon and maize. MORIBUND HEALTH FACILITY Contrary to claims by PPL on their website of adequate supply and provisions of drugs to the health facilities built by DESOPADEC, the moribund health centre was under lock and key when Ndokwa Watch Communications visited. Not even a single health worker was sighted let alone drugs to be administered. This is despite the billions of dollars being extracted from the environment and EBEDEI being an oil producing community. BLAME GAMES When this reporter sought the opinions of EBEDEI sons and daughters both at home and in diaspora, accusations and counter accusations that will be of no significant to the community become the real deal. While some accused the OGMC of sell out, others are of the opinion that those should have acted on their behalf have been bought over by the company. While the blame games continue, PPL is not relenting on its negative environmental operation and EBEDEI continues to bear the brunt. Who knows, in five years time EBEDEI might seize to exist.

EBEDEI, NO LONGER AT EASE, PLATFORM PETROLEUM LIMITED, THE ENEMY AT THE GATE. Woeful tales have become the lot of EBEDEI for being a host community to Platform Petroleum limited (PPL) an oil and gas drilling company. Almost over a decade of oil exploration in Ebedei and its environ, their farmlands, vegetation, water bodies, and the general environment have been badly devastated as a result of gas flaring which has also affected the people's health as all manners of diseases accompany gas flaring. EBEDEI, UNDERDEVELOPED Outside Brrister Achugbue, no any other illustrious son or daughter from Ebedei is in the pay roll of the company in the management cadre. Technically speaking, it may not be a violation, but it is certainly repugnant to the spirit of the law establishing local content development of the oil and gas sector in Nigeria. The company, recently commissioned its gas plant, one of the biggest in West Africa, engineers employed to man strategic post are from outside Ebedei, despite competent hands that abound in the community. GLOBAL MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING, A CHARADE A look at the memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the company and the host communities shows a gross arm twisting by the company. The company in the MOU, entered an agreement to pay a paltry fifty million naira (#50,000,000) amongst Ebedei, Umutu, Akoku annually as part of development projects and other sundry entitlement to the host community. We gathered from one of the OGMC member (name withheld) that the company paid each of them #600,000 at BENEZIA hotel, Asaba to agreed to the terms of the company when the MOU was being drafted. EBEDEI ELITES, VERY DOCILE Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who could have acted, the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most, that has made it possible for evil to triumph. Despite being an oil mineral producing community, no single representative from Ebedei has been appointed in the board of DESOPADEC. Ken Okolugbo, who is from Obiaruku, through the dubious machinations of PDP shortchanged the community in connivance with the state assembly. All these are left unchallenged by those who should have acted.

IF PDP IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CURRENT ECONOMIC WOES, THEN WHO? Politics is about a process of acquiring power and then using to powers to authoritatively allocate resources for the general wellbeing of the citizenry. But for sixteen years, this was not so. Between 1999 and 2015, the PDP led Federal government was ruled by a political class that relentlessly feathers its own nest and lots state coffers on an industrial scale stubbornly refusing to save up for the rainy day. We had always know that a drop in the price of oil would sentence Nigeria to hard times as we now experience. PDP for sixteen years was busy building empires for people who wanted to use Nigeria as a franchise to be able to rehabilitate their age long failed ambition. So it beats my imagination when PDP members come out openly to criticise APC government who is just barely one year in office. It is therefore unconscionable that those who show contrition and hunker down to avoid public opprobrium are the same ones pointing an accusing fingers. If not PDP, how can the British prime minister label Nigeria as fantastically corrupt.
