WE STILL MOURN THE NIGERIAN HERO, 42 YEARS AFTER HIS DEATH Fellow compatriots, today marks the 42nd anniversary of the death of General Murtala Muhammed, who was executed in cold blood, on Friday, 13th February 1976. As many of you are aware, General Muhammed was the original anti-corruption Guru of Nigeria. Within the span of just 6 months of his reign, he achieved the unthinkable. He purged the Nigerian civil service like it was never done before. He sent many corrupt officials to prison for their crimes against the Nigerian state. Many foreign companies that were sucking the blood of Nigeria were sent packing home. He nationalised assets like the NNPC. Perhaps, his most enduring legacy, is the creation of Abuja as Nigeria's new federal capital. He gave Japanese consultancy firms contract to design Abuja from scratch. May the gentle soul of General Murtala Muhammed rest in perfect peace. Ameen.
