Tanzania cuts live parliamentary coverage, ending vital news source for citizens
On April 19, the live coverage of proceedings in the Tanzanian parliament ended as a government decision to halt the service went into effect. The move, announced by Information Minister Nape Nnauye in January, has led to protests from the opposition party and journalists' groups, who said they view the decision to stop live broadcasts of parliamentary debates as tantamount to censorship. AMDF Holds Media Clinic On World Press Freedom Day
The African Media Development Foundation, (AMDF) held its second annual media clinic to mark the World Press Freedom Day on Tuesday 3rd May 2016 in Kaduna, Nigeria. The event which had in attendance journalists, media practitioners and civil society organizations focused on press freedom and safety of the journalist in Nigeria and Africa. Presenting a paper titled “Understanding the Freedom of Information Act”, Abel Adejor from LEADS Nigeria pointed out the importance of the FOI law as a “major tool for fighting corruption, as it can be used in enhancing accountability and transparency in governance”. New York, May 3, 2016 - Nigerian authorities should drop all criminal charges against journalist Jacob Onjewu Dickson and release him without delay, the Committee to Protect Journalists said today. Dickson has been held in pre-trial detention on incitement charges since Friday.
