Mrs. Obiano stated this in a chat with newsmen,Friday on the heels of the just concluded meeting of the Forum held in Lagos. Mrs Obiano noted that the Southern Governor's Wives Forum which is made up of spouses of the seventeen state governors in the south of Nigeria have through their pet projects supported good governance by their husband's admirations and are touching the lives of less privileged members of the society who often find themselves last in line. As wives who do not have constitutional mandate and no funding, we try our best to live up to the pledge we made to donors and sponsors through the projects we undertake and the many lives we change for the better." According to Mrs Obiano, “These are trying times for our country and many families but it is also a good time to rededicate ourselves to good courses and to being our brothers and sisters keeper. On my part, I have through my NGO Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE) continued to help the needy especially indigent Widows who recently got ten free houses under phase one of the CAFE Housing for Indigent Widows, not to mention CAFE Market Toilets and many other empowerment programmes." Addressing members of the SGWF when they paid him courtesy visit at Alausa, Lagos State Governor, Dr. Akinwumi Ambode, acknowledged that efforts by Governors to deliver good governance will not be effective without the complementary role by their wives described the Forum as an important platform that would enable wives of Governors to share knowledge and exchange notes on governance. During the programme held at the Governors’ Lodge Amawbia the health assistants who work in remote communities across Anambra State also received the pleasant news of their deployment under the payroll of the Ministry of Health which would henceforth handle thevpayment of their stipend. Addressing the Community Health Workers, the wife of the Governor reminded them that a lot of resources had been committed to train and equip them to fulfill important health needs in the rural communities so as to help stop high mortality rate especially amongst pregnant women. Mrs. Obiano further told the women to always remember what they were thought and know that their role was to assist in emergencies. Said she: “I want you all to take your jobs seriously because you have been empowered as part of the plans to improve the lives and health of Ndi Anambra. I am aware that the government has redoubled its efforts since we made a case for the remote areas with your training. The Governor has therefore graciously approved your recognition as part of the programme to spread healthcare far and wide to remote communities as health aides to assist the professional medical staff." “I expect that you should be able to summon village square meetings of women to teach them how to take care of children with foods of high nutrient content that are not very expensive. Also teach the pregnant women on how to stay healthy during pregnancy and also get help for them in case of labour.” Mrs. Obiano commended the women for availing themselves the opportunity for the training and charged them to make effective use of the mobile phones by ensuring that their people can contact them and also contact health officials; and use the motorcycles with baby cots as well as other materials given to them to save lives, especially during emergencies. She equally assured that the challenges reported with their work tools and motorcycle with baby cot would be improved for ease of access to very interior terrain. In his remarks, the Hon Commissioner for Health Dr. Joe Akabike said that when the wife of the Governor introduced the CHW initiative “we were looking for ways to make it work and today we are happy to say it is a well thought out scheme. You have been trained as special health workers to assist in the remote areas where there are not enough Doctors and Nurses.” According to Dr. Akabike, “you are largely expected to attend to women in emergency situation in communities to avoid untimely death. I am happy that you recognize that you are not Nurses or Midwives but have been trained to bridge the gap in the rural communities to stem the prevalence of high maternal death by ensuring that patients get professional health care on time. Yours is a call to service and we assure you that we will continue to train you and equip you for the job." The Commissioner for Health also reminded the Community Health workers that they were CAFE Ambassadors because they represent CAFE through their activities in the area of health in the rural communities. Mrs. Obiano advocates Moral Re-orientation, decries Violence against Children The wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Her Excellency, Chief (Mrs) Ebelechukwu Obiano has advocated steadfast promotion of moral values and re-orientation in the upbringing of children and for greater attention to prevention of all forms of violence and abuse of children to assure a better future for them. The wife of the governor stated this in her national Children’s Day Message Friday in Awka, Anambra State. Mrs Obiano who described children as the most vulnerable group of modern society said that the average child is not just looking up to the elders for tutelage and mentoring as they grow older, but are increasingly prone to all forms of molestation orchestrated by depraved adults and called for such acts to be condemned by all men and women of goodwill and sanctioned by relevant authorities. Said Mrs Obiano: “The Child Rights Act (2003) provides that the “best interest” of the child should be of paramount importance in all actions concerning the child. It therefore demands concerted efforts of all stakeholders for meaningful progress to be achieved against child-related acts of violence such as rape, child labour and trafficking.” “Like every mother, I understand and appreciate the need to protect and provide for our children. Every mother wants the best for her children, but the society at large must be conscious of the needs of the average child and provide for them. It is therefore important that we train and nurture every child to grow up with the fear of God. I believe the way to achieve this is to sustain moral education and moral re-orientation as well as protect children from all forms of abuse. These are among the issues I engage through my NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ). The wife of the Governor restated her commitment to giving opportunities to individuals especially women and youth through her empowerment programmes with training in various vocations, as well as the promotion and protection of the Rights of the Child within the family and the society at large. She also called on the children and parents to spare a thought and prayers for other children who are unable to celebrate the Children’s Day this year especially the sick, the less privileged ones, orphans and many who are inhibited by factors beyond their control.

The centre which is run and managed by the wife of the Governor through CAFÉ in collaboration with the State Ministry of Social Development, Women and Children Affairs, had been handling fifty two inmates out of which twenty seven have been discharged while the remaining ones are still being treated and rehabilitated with a view to returning them to their families at the shortest possible time. The programme leading to the discharge of the inmates started with a Mass held by Reverend Father John Manafa while the inmates were later engaged in singing and praises thanking God for his goodness upon them. Addressing the inmates and some family members who turned up for the final discharge ceremony at the centre, the wife of the Governor, who was represented by the Commissioner for Social Welfare, Women and Children Affairs, Dr. (Mrs.) Victoria Chikwelu thanked God for using Chief Mrs. Obiano to save most of the mentally challenged inmates who are being treated at the centre. Dr. Chikwelu who noted that the event was a happy occasion, apologized for the absence of the Wife of the Governor but explained that she had sent her good wishes to the inmates especially those going home. Said the Commissioner: “God is doing great things in our state through the humane leadership approach of our governor and his supportive wife, Ebelechukwu. It is a fact that most of you are from outside Anambra and now that you are well again you can go back and live normal life thankful to God that you were cared for in Anambra State.” She also thanked the staff of the Centre for their dedication to duty and care for the inmates and urged them to keep up the good work because God would equally reward them. Earlier in his Sermon during the Mass, Reverend Father John Manafa described Trinity as a mystery and love of God and maintained that through Jesus Christ the inmates are receiving their healings. He advised them to always keep the laws of God so as to continue to enjoy His grace and charged them to avoid abuse of substances and intake of hard drugs that may endanger their health but rather sustain their new health by always taking their medications. Rev. Father Manafa, thanked Governor Willie Obiano for the support and belief in the capacity of his wife to establish and run the centre, supported by the Ministry, the medical team and other staff who have made it possible for the twenty-seven inmates to return to good health and prayed to God to continue to bless them. Speaking on behalf of the discharged persons, Mr. Friday Rufus from Oyo State who was overwhelmed by emotion thanked the Governor’s wife for caring for them like their mother and prayed for God to bless and protect her and her family. On his part, a former Youth Corper, Mr. Augustine Kula, who rescued and brought a mentally sick man to the centre where he is still receiving treatment said he learnt of the Nteje Home run by the wife of the governor and being motivated by God had to bring the man to the centre. He advised people to emulate the selfless service of the wife of the governor and her team, stressing that it is good to help others

Mrs. Obiano Promotes Clean Environment with CAFE Market Toilets In a practical demonstration of support for government programme on environmental hygiene and cleanliness, two modern toilet facilities built by the Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFE), an NGO was recently commissioned by the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano. The Toilets built under the auspices of CAFE Market Toilet project at Eke Igwe Nteje Market in Oyi Local Government and Afor Mbaukwu in Awka South Local Government Area are part of the first phase of the facilities which the governor’s wife is constructing in select rural markets across the three Senatorial Districts of the State to boost environmental hygiene in rural markets in the state. Speaking while commissioning Eke Igwe Nteje Toilet, Chief Mrs. Obiano said that the toilet project is targeted at improving the welfare of the women-folk through personal hygiene, environmental cleanliness and preservation of the dignity of the women. According to Mrs. Obiano," the concept of the Market Toilet is borne out of genuine desire to promote healthy market environment and cleanliness in our rural markets and the well-being of our industrious mothers. I observed the lack of basic conveniences in the rural markets, and decided to encourage them by preserving their self-esteem. The toilets are complementary to the good work of the government in the area of maintenance of clean environment, and as you can see it is funded by donors whose selfless input are recognized on the plaque placed on the walls here for posterity. This is my modest way of ensuring that our society and our children stay healthy always in this 21st century.” Mrs. Obiano stated that apart from promoting hygiene, the toilet which has male and female sections is also a source of empowerment because women leaders in the communities are identified to manage it and keep it clean with little money collected from users. A borehole is also be sited nearby to provide water to the facility while at the same time dispensing water to locals through an extended outlet. She called on the people to treat the toilet facility as their own and ensure it is well kept. In their separate welcome addresses, Chairman of Oyi Local Government Council Mr. Maxi Oraefo and his counterpart in Awka South Local Government, Hon Azubika Ilo, commended governor Obiano and his wife for working towards better living condition in the communities of Anambra state. They also called on the women to make good use of the facilities as well as Ndi Anambra to give the governor and his wife maximum support. Commending the CAFÉ rural market toilet initiative, Igwe Roland Odegbo of Nteje said that the market toilet is one the projects the governor’s wife is executing through her NGO to improve the fortunes of women in our communities. He described Osodieme as a “blessing not just to her husband governor Obiano, but to Ndi Anambra for ensuring that our people are getting double value in good governance.” According to Igwe Odegbo, “I can’t enumerate all that Mrs. Obiano has done under two years of her husband’s remarkable stewardship in Anambra. Many of you are aware of her support for the physically challenged through donation of free prosthetic limbs, empowerment of women in various skills, care for the mentally challenged in a home right here in Nteje, and most importantly the building of free houses for indigent widows.” She is indeed God sent, Igwe concluded. In her remarks at Afor Nibo, Oche-eze Mbaukwu, Dr. Mrs. Ebele Anugwu, observed that the benefits of the CAFÉ Market toilet project to the women and the community is unquantifiable. Apart from promoting clean environment and healthy living and by extention preventing certain types of diseases, the quality of life in the beneficiary communities instantly improves. Dr. Mrs. Anugwu describes Mrs. Obiano as a remarkable and kind hearted woman whose concern for the welfare of woman in Anambra is unparalleled. The CAFÉ market toilet project is currently under construction in other locations across communities in the state.

The wife of the governor who was speaking during the rescheduled empowerment tour of the Council area charged the women to pay attention to what their leaders and representatives are doing in order to understand when it is in their interest. You must pay attention to what is happening around you and pay attention to the welfare of your neighbours, as well as make your own contribution for peace and progress in our communities and the whole of Anambra State." Mrs. Obiano reminded the people that the Obiano administration has kept faith with his promise of 4C's -Continue, Complete, Commission and Commence new projects by not abandoning any projects inherited from the past administration and completing new ones too. When Mrs. Obiano Fulfilled House Promise to Late Widow In continuation of CAFÉ Housing for Indigent Widows project, a programme of her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ), the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano on March 30, 2016 fulfilled her promise to a late widow, Late Mrs. Chidili Igboamalu with the Commissioning and handover of a 2-bedroom bungalow at Isioye Village Umunya, Oyi Local Government Area, Anambra State. Another indigent widow, Mrs. Nneuwa Nwajideofor was rewarded with a house same day at Enugwu Otu Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Areas as well as Mrs. Maureen Ekesiobi in Ogbunike, Oyi Local Government Area. Other beneficiaries were Mrs. Chinyeaka Okeke in Amichi, Nnewi South, and Mrs. Margaret Anoyou of Amorka, Ihiala Local Government Area. The Umunya beneficiary, Late Mrs. Chidili Igboamalu was reportedly excited and full of praises to God when the Wife of the Governor came to her rescue in October 2015 but suddenly passed on in December last year shortly before she was billed to receive the keys and move into her new home. However, the governor’s wife still kept her word by handing over keys to the completed house to daughter of the deceased, Miss blessing Igboamalu who sang praises with overflowing tears of joy for promise fulfilled to the admiration of all and commendations for Mrs. Obiano for the charitable act by neighbours. The wife of the governor lamented the death of the beneficiary whom she regretted she never me but was shocked to hear that she passed-on. She recalled her resolve to complete the project and hand it over to one of the daughters and her sense of accomplishment that the handover was taking place. Mrs. Obiano told Umunya people that CAFÉ is determined to support the efforts of the governor by empowering women and youths with a view to reducing unemployment. Explaining the unique idea of building a house and a borehole, Mrs. Obiano said that whereas the beneficiary widow takes possession of the house, she is able to access water from the borehole but the water source is extended to serve members of the community. According to the Governor’s wife, a women leader is charged with the task of managing and maintaining each borehole for a period of two after which the management is transferred to another woman thus serving as a source of empowerment. So far about ten boreholes have been built and commissioned alongside the houses while more are still under construction across the state. She outlined some of the things CAFÉ has done in the past two years to provide succor to various women and needy groups. These include; Housing for indigent widows in each Senatorial Zone, new skills and empowerment training for over 2000 women, prosthetic limbs and Wheel chairs for 800 persons; free cleft lip/cleft palate surgeries, the rescue and care for mentally challenged and the building of Toilets in our rural Markets amongst other programmes. All these charity projects by CAFÉ, she said were made possible with donations and the support of philanthropists. Commending the wife of the governor for the wonderful gesture, Member Representing Oyi in Anambra State House of Assembly, Hon Mrs. Vivian Okadigbo, called on the people of the community to support the working governor of Anambra State for his development programmes, and the wife, for touching lives of Ndi Anambra at all levels through laudable charitable programmes like the free house for indigent widows. It was a carnival of sorts when Mrs. Obiano and her entourage arrived at Enugwu Otu, Aguleri border community in Anambra East Local Government Area to commission the house built for the widow and a water borehole for the community. As expected the excited residents trooped out in large numbers to welcome her with joy, drumming and dancing calling her by her traditional title “Osodieme” which means one that does good like the husband. Many expressed appreciation that she remembered a member of the community by building a house free for her and also took the pains to visit them in the remotest part of the State. Addressing the people, the wife of the governor told them that she is aware that the new road and bridge connecting the community and the rest of the state will soon be commissioned since work on it had reached advanced stage. Said she: “When I came here the first time over two years ago during the election campaign, I crossed-over with canoe and rode on bike but today I am glad that we came by road because our Governor has fulfilled his election promise to the people. I also made observations then about your condition of living that is why we are assisting with a house for the widow and borehole for the community.” Mrs. Obiano urged the people not to relent in their support for the governor since more development will be channeled to the community in the future. She also called on the women to show interest in what is happening especially in her office where they can register to be trained in various skills after which they will be empowered with materials to practice the trade. In his thank you message, the traditional ruler, Mkpunando Otu Aguleri, Igwe Alex Edoziuno, thanked Governor Obiano for constructing a bridge and the road that will link the community with the rest of the state. He equally commended the governor’s wife for supporting the governor by taking care of women and the less privileged, and assured that they will be firm in their support of the governor and his government. In another rare display of compassion Mrs. Obiano commissioned a 2-bedroom bungalow built for Mr. & Mrs. Nwoye Ekesiobi at Ifite Village, Ogbunike in Oyi Local Government Area. Before the intervention of the governor’s wife through CAFE, the couple lived under a leaky mud house with thatched roofing with six young children none of whom could attend school because the man had grown frail and unable to fend for their upkeep. Thankfully today, apart from handing over keys to the beautiful house to them, the governor’s wife promised that CAFÉ will take care of funding the education of the children. Handing over the keys to the Amichi house to a very emotional Mrs. Chinyeaka Okeke who shed tears of joy, the wife of the Governor told the crowd gathered that CAFÉ Housing for Indigent widows’ project is not influenced or done on the basis of political party affiliation or close associates. According to Mrs. Obiano, “I am meeting the beneficiary for the first time today just to hand over the keys to her house so that she can live better with her children. The house is free and there are no strings attached.” In her reaction, Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Barrister Rita Maduagwu, said “I am so thrilled that this is happening in my Constituency, Nnewi South. I haven’t seen a Governor’s who seeks out indigent widows to build house for them without even knowing who they are. Mrs Obiano is a blessing to her husband and Anambra State. She is Osodieme in action and deeds, and I pray for God to continue to protect and guide them.” Also at Umuokpara Village, Amorka, Ihiala Local Government Area, Mrs. Obiano told the community that she came to ensure that the widow and her children finally had a befitting house to live in. Hear her: “We came to Amorka to display the love we have for our state and people. It is a thing of joy that our Governor who recently marked two years in office is being compared with others who have spent longer time in office. It is a confirmation that he is doing a good job. I believe that when God elevates you, He expects you to touch lives whether you are in Government or not.” On her part the beneficiary, Mrs. Margaret Anoyou, was full of thanks and praises as she received the keys to her new home. An equally astonished neighbor, Mr. Edmund Okeke could not hold back his surprise. Hear him: “I came here to observe and confirm that this is indeed true. I am transfixed in awe at such a stroke of good fortune for a woman who had lost all hope only to be approached with such a gift with no strings attached. This governor’s wife is God sent.” He concluded. CAFÉ Housing for Indigent widows is a programme conceived by the wife of the governor to assist indigent widows in Anambra State who do not have a decent roof over their heads. The projects are strategically spread across the three Senatorial Zones of the state with beneficiaries selected on the basis of those adjudged to be most in need in their communities. So far, ten houses have been built by Mrs. Obiano for widows across Anambra state and many more are under construction.

Mrs Obiano marks Easter with Prisoners, Promises Empowerment Support In keeping with the mandate of her NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ), the wife of the Governor of Anambra State, Chief (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano has promised to provide empowerment support to any inmate of Onitsha Prisons who excels at the Skills Acquisition Centre planned for the facility by the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha. Mrs. Obiano made the pledge during Easter Sunday Mass at the Onitsha Prisons, Anambra State. The wife of the governor whose NGO CAFÉ provides empowerment for indigent women and widows, and the less privileged with funding by philanthropists, cautioned the inmates about acts that can worsen their state after serving their sentence and charged them to do the right knowing that the prison term is temporal. Said she: “I don’t like to see people begging when they can easily support themselves with skills to earn a living; with what you learn at the centre you can be meaningfully engaged, be an entrepreneur, and like one of the points in the Anambra State Shared Values: “Be part of the solution not the problem.” That way, you come out reformed and a better citizen.” Mrs. Obiano also expressed her displeasure over the news that the inmates tried to mutiny over the discovery and stoppage of the trafficking in Indian hemp inside the facility. She commended the eleven inmates who embraced Christ through the Sacrament of Confirmation for choosing to do right rather than join the illegal agitation, she stated, “ Now that you have given yourself to Christ, now that you decided to abandon the things that may have brought you here, I know you will come out of here better citizens.” Mrs. Obiano thanked the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese for donating the Skills Acquisition centre which she noted will help the inmates turn out better citizens. She also gave gifts including cartons of beverages, assorted food and ten bags of Anambra rice which she assured is of the best quality and a product of Chief Willie Obiano’s agricultural revolution in the state. She advised those who can to take advantage of the export of vegetables like pumpkin leaf amongst others. Earlier in his Easter Message to the inmates, the Catholic Archbishop of Onitsha Archdiocese, Most Rev. Dr. Valerian Okeke, told them that Easter is a message and a victory which confirms that God the Father always have the final word. He condemned the attempted mutiny by the inmates over preference for illicit drugs and urged them to avoid such acts to avoid losing the opportunity to change their lives. The Archbishop also prayed for Anambra State which he said is already a reference point in many aspects of governance and asked all to pray for more grace from God to help the State Governor to do well for the state to remain exemplary. He assured the inmates that the diocese will build the Skills Acquisition centre as promised and urged the Prison authorities not to hesitate to punish the erring inmates. According to her, “On one hand I condemn the act of abandoning the baby but in another breath, I want to commend her for wrapping the baby well and ensuring that he did not suffocate. Perhaps, she heeded my previous plea for mothers with unwanted babies to keep them where they can be seen and taken care of. They can drop them near Governor’s Lodge, Fire station or a hospital.” Mrs. Obiano who expressed happiness that the baby she saw is healthy and well-taken care of by the Teaching Hospital, praised the professionalism of the Doctors, Nurses and management for sparing no effort and material in their response to ensure the survival of Baby Moses. Also in the spirit of Easter, Mrs. Obiano stated that like every Anambra woman she is ready to help and ensure that Baby Moses and every other baby grow up healthy because they have a right to life. She also called on Anambra women to imbibe the Biblical injunction to “love your neighbor as yourself,” and “Be our brothers and sisters keeper,“ by always looking out to help those in need around us especially in the present harsh economic condition of the country. Earlier, Chief Medical Director, Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka, Dr. Lawrence Ikeakor, said that they received Baby Moses in critical condition from agile State Sweepers but thanked God that he is responding to treatment. He revealed that the baby, who weighs 1.25 kilogram, will remain in the incubator for two weeks when they expect that the weight would improve to 1.8kg. Dr. Ikeakor commended the wife of the governor for her caring nature and visit to the hospital, as well as the Anambra State Government for providing the equipment necessary for treatment of cases like that of Baby Moses and others which according to him; “is assisting us in the effective discharge of our duties.”
