HELP SAVE A PRECIOUS LIFE A BRIEF ON LEONARD DIBIA KIDNEY TRANSPLANT PROJECT ABOUT LEONARD Leonard attended SPC Asaba between 1973 and 1978 (school certificate course) and 1979-1980 (HSC course). He was senior prefect of our glorious college between 1979-1980, and most remarkably stood out as an epitome of discipline and good behavior. An icon of enviable leadership, his charisma momentarily led SPC to its former glory at a time when most post-primary institutions in Nigeria were in a scandalous state. In one word, Leonard rekindled the patrician spirit, of which we all remain proud. HIS APPEAL Having come to a most frustrating period in his life, and with reasonable help lacking from well meaning Nigerians, he thought it necessary to appeal to his patrician brothers. THE HEALTH PROBLEM Leonard’s diabetic condition of 18 years developed into an end-case kidney failure in September 2014. And his life has since been sustained through weekly (2 times) dialysis @ a whooping cost of 61,000 naira per week, minus the cost of repeated medical tests and palliative drugs. Being a husband and father of four girls, the sustenance of his family (rent, school fees, etc) equally takes a toll of his finances and those of his relatives. CURRENT MEDICAL ADVICE The medical advice is that Leonard should proceed for outright kidney transplant. The dialysis sessions (though are still being done to keep him alive) are becoming too traumatic for his spent frame, and complications such as partial blindness and paralysis are occurring. STATE OF PREPAREDNESS • Contacts have since been made with hospitals in India and Nigeria (LASUTH). • A donor has been found, and all preliminary medical examinations and compatibility tests have been done @ LASUTH, and certified as okay. COST INDICATIONS Presented here under are rough estimates derived from costing given by two kidney treatment centers in Nigeria. Transplant in India • Basic cost of transplant ___________________________________________$26,000 (See document attached from a Nigeria hospital guide) • Associated expenses including air tickets and accommodation,etc________$3,000 Total India $29,000 Transplant in Nigeria • Basic cost of transplant and post-transplant medicines, etc ¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬¬______________#7.4million Total Nigeria ______#7.4million SUGGESTED TERMS OF ASSITANCE a. For transplant Considering that the cost out lay is obviously high, we would appreciate that any helpers should contribute (all or part) according to their ability. Donations can be paid to ZENITH BANK PLC. Account name: Leonard Dibia Account number: 1005576765 b. Continued dialysis It is equally necessary for Leonard to continue dialysis, pending when the fund for transplant is ready. We spend between #60,000 - #70,000 weekly. We should appreciate even piecemeal contributions in this regard, no matter how small. Donations should be made to ZENITH BANK PLC.
