The learning community:
artistic practices as debating laboratories
Debate – internship – thesis – research – exhibitions
The two year master course POLIS considers contemporary art as a dynamic network of debating practices.
Artists are not problem solvers, on the contrary they pose questions by making ‘things’, they visualize complexity and they generate ideas in order to open new perspectives.
They are not isolated, but they constantly relate to a social context by using the debate.
The artistic practice as a debating laboratory is a strong instrument which can be used to show the intrinsic value of a pluraform humanity.
According Hannah Arendt ‘polis’ stands for “the organization of the people as it arises out of acting and speaking together, and its true space lies between people living together for this purpose, no matter where they happen to be.”
POLIS is meant to be an exceptional educational situation where students are trained how to take position by using debate, in order to connect to society in stead of being adaptable to the market.
POLIS-participants are attracted by one specific art educational model, researching artistic practice in the center of a democratic society by using the debate.
They experience public space as collaborative platform, they use empty spaces as their arena’s, they approach art institutions as intellectual playgrounds, they seek fertile environments to let grow their crop…
Two visual artists, a designer and a philosopher will accompany this odd flock of people during many debates (using images and words), long walks, artistic explorations and lunch.
