We are a grass-roots NGO and project organization. We aim to enhance social inclusion of vulnerable minority-groups. Our organisation is based in one of the "focus areas" of the Dutch capital Amsterdam: ‘De Indische Buurt’. This is where most of our activities take place. Our neighbourhood is characterized by a multitude of ethnicities such as Turks, Moroccans and Surinamese and to a lesser extent, Afghans, Somalis, Egyptians, Pakistanis and Ghanaians.
Employees and volunteers of knowledge centres and social work organisations established ‘Stichting Diversiteitsland’ in 2008. They saw a civil society struggling with themes like under-education, passive citizenship, poverty and social exclusion. These issues led to the decision to bundle their experience and advise policymakers on how to use the opportunities created through a culturally diverse society for the general benefit. Especially now the topics of aging and shortages on the labour market are becoming more and more the trend.
We differ from others by our bottom-up approach: the activities arise from the demands of our neighbourhood residents. They keep us focused on themes such as positive advocacy, empowerment, participation, stereotyping, opinion, dialogue, networking and tolerance. We build lasting relationships between these neighbourhood residents and organizations, in order to achieve a greater mutual understanding and communication. The result, for project-participants, should always be a greater involvement in society, and the experience of a higher sense of wellbeing.
Projects we take pride in? We mention a few just to give you an idea: “Child & Colour” is a parenting course about living in two different cultures. “Being read to is wonderful” is a project that promotes literacy in children of immigrants. We also have tea parties for immigrant women and group discussions about Alzheimer’s disease.
In recent years we have built up a solid network. This has led to a web of contacts that includes women's organisations, sports, welfare, cultural and migrant organisations. We have established European contacts in Germany, Turkey, Belgium, Austria and France and we plan to expand even further into Europe:
We want to continue exchanges with young people in European grant programmes. In addition we seek like-minded organisations to collaborate with, on themes such as European citizenship, social inclusion and unemployment. Het onderwerp van de exchange is Europees bewustzijn en burgerschap. Accommodatie en maaltijden zijn gratis. Reiskosten worden tot 170 euro vergoed. Hiernaast betaal je enkel 100 euro aan inschrijfkosten. Aan het einde van de exchange ontvang je een certificaat van de EU, dat een mooie aanvulling kan zijn op je CV. "A European dream" is a youth exchange project taking place in Slovenia 6th May – 14th May. It will bring together youth from Northern Ireland, The Netherlands, Poland, Turkey and Slovenia. The youth exchange will take place in western Slovenia in a small village called Elerji near the Slovenian seaside. Transport will be arranged from the nearest town of Koper. We wish to trace the beginning and the development of the idea of Europe and European values through history and current geopolitical events. This is knowledge that a citizen of European Union should necessarily be equipped with, but for some reason we do not get this knowledge in institutions and we also don't talk about European politics and history among young people because it's just not 'cool'. The project is very relevant in the context of the current geopolitical situation in Europe where integration of nations, as well as the new refugees, seems almost impossible. In response to Brexit, president of the European Parliament recently stated in a public article that 'EU is in a existential crisis'. The participants will be selected by each organisation. The age of the participants is set between 18 and 30 (except for the group leader, who can be over 30). We will reimburse you up to 170 EUR of travel costs to Koper. Komende april en mei hebben wij een tweedelige uitwisseling! De uitwisseling staat in het teken van arbeidsmigratie, carriere plannen, werkloosheid, ondernemen en sociale ongelijkheid. Wie zoeken wij? Je bent jong en gedreven maar kunt minder kansen vinden op de arbeidsmarkt. Je vind het leuk om samen te werken met mensen uit verschillende landen en staat open voor een nieuwe ervaring. Wij hebben plek voor 5 deelnemers tussen de 18 en 30 jaar en 1 groepsleider ongeacht de leeftijd. Je moet kunnen communiceren in het Engels en beschikbaar zijn tijdens beide weken. Tijdens deze exchange ben je samen met deelnemers uit Spanje, Noorwegen, Duitsland, Servie en Hongarije.
