More than 30 years of horticultural expertise and innovation Gavita is the oldest specialised horticultural lighting company. We build on 30 years of accumulated knowledge and innovation. Many of the Gavita innovations are now de facto standards in horticultural lighting. In 2009 Gavita entered the hobby / hydroponics market as Gavita Holland bv with a selection of adapted professional luminaries and a series of new products, specifically aimed at the hobby indoor en greenhouse grower.
Based Aalsmeer, The Netherlands, Gavita serves customers world-wide. Our installations range from 1 - 40,000 luminaries per site. As a development partner of Philips, General Electric and Osram, Gavita designs and produces state of the art electronic ballasts, high efficiency reflectors and complete fixtures. We build OEM equipment for several large lighting companies.
For greenhouses and indoor facilities we design lighting plans and in our testing facilities we evaluate lamps and reflectors for hundreds of horticultural growers. Testing facilities include the Ulbricht integrating sphere for accurate light measurements.
Being a front runner in lighting development Gavita tests and implements new technology, such as plasma light and high frequency electronic ballasts. Our innovative reflector designs offer the highest efficiency in the market.

Fake or not? Every edition of Garden Culture Magazine you can test your knowledge and critical reading capabilities. Many pseudo-scientific articles come with scientific references, and mis-use that to prove a point. This edition is about photosynthetic efficiency. Does spectrum really matter that much for photosynthetic efficiency? Or is there another reason why a wide spectrum is better? Cast your vote, fake or not, and discuss. 15th of May we reveal the answer. https://gardenculturemagazine.com/fake-or-not/

Better safe than sorry, especially when it concerns your eyes! Dealing with high intensity lighting on a daily base and the installation of high power lighting requires a good understanding of the dangers involved. It's not only UV you need to be worried about, even blue light can be dangerous. In episode 8 of the editorial series "Light Matters", Theo Tekstra discusses the main dangers of working with high intensity lighting, and the installation and maintenance of them. Episode 4 in our editorial series "Light Matters" from Garden Culture Magazine is now published on our website. This week, Theo Tekstra discusses the five most common mistakes and misconceptions in lighting. They include reflector placement, air cooled reflectors and the difference between medium wide and deep reflectors. If your buddy still tells you that you have to space your lamps in a 4x4 grid then this is a must-read for your buddy too! Our marketing manager, Theo Tekstra, frequently contributes to magazines and on-line publications. For Garden Culture Magazine he writes a series of articles about light and lighting, published under the title "Light Matters". The first three articles are now published on our website for download. Coming weeks we will add one more every week until all 9 are published. You will also find five articles from issues before Light Matters became a regular feature. This week's episode (LM3) is about space optimization and optimal light positioning. We light rooms, not just plants. Repositioning your lights and adapting your grow space can lead to a much better utilization of your light and can increase your yield by as much as 25%. Why? How? Measuring the efficiency of HID lamps in a reflector is done with a photogoniometer. How that works, you can see in a previous video we made. In that video we said there was a catch when you measure HID lamps in a reflector. (link to previous video: https://www.facebook.com/Gavitainternational/videos/1096406357064762/) What it comes down to is that all commercial labs measure the light output of a reflector in lumen. What you measure in lumen depends on the spectrum of the lamp: lumen are measured according to the sensitivity of the human eye. PAR light is not measured according to a curve, it's all the photons between 400 and 700 nm in total. An HPS lamp in a reflector, specifically in a more closed reflector, warms up and you will see a slight spectral shift because of that. The difference in lumen output, as this is based on the human eye sensitivity curve, can be dramatic. A warmer lamp can show up to 10% less lumen output, or even more. The PAR output however hardly changes! What does this mean? 1. If you measure efficiency in lumen, a warm lamp can show a much lower efficiency in a reflector 2. All lighting labs around the world use lumen as a standard - it is part of their ANSI/CIE measurement protocols 3. Though lumens output of a lamp in a reflector can change a lot, the PAR output hardly changes 4. Using lumen output to quantify reflector efficiency leads to disinformation if you use it for growing plants 5. In a lumen measurement, an open reflector will perform much better as the lamp does not warm up that much. This is also the reason why you see so many measurements with different results. In most cases they are comparisons from accredited lighting labs, using the wrong methodology for measuring grow light. There is a solution for this issue, which was developed by the Philips lighting labs (the largest manufacturers of HID lamps in the world). Gavita uses this same methodology, and calibrates its photo lab according to Philips standards. In this video I sit down with Freddy Manders from Philips, and we explain how that works, and why so many published efficiency measurements are so incorrect.
