Nyanza Kenya Ostomy Association- NKOA
Description
A leading association recognised for ostomy care, paediatric surgical care, and social health and well-being of children. Following the course for doctors and nursing staff from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda on Treatment and Rehabilitation of Ostomy conducted as from 11th to 16th February 2013 at Kisumu District Hospital under British Medical Association funding, individuals who had undergone ostomy surgery and experienced significant problems in their rehabilitation efforts founded Nyanza Kenya Ostomy Association (NKOA). This association was established to provide support to individuals with colostomy, ileostomy and urostomy in Nyanza Province. The purpose of the association is to share resources, tips, information and to realize that together it is possible to overcome this handicap easily and find the joy of living again.
However, due to challenges NKOA had had in handling children with congenital anomalies like low self-esteem, lack of quality surgical care and high cost, limited schooling, discrimination practices, caregivers abandoned by family and community, condemnatory attitude faulting them for their conditions and barring from social services, Nyanza Kenya Ostomy Association decided to found Resurge Children East Africa (RCEA)to ensure an environment in which no child suffer physically or emotionally from repairable surgical and treatable medical conditions or poverty. The organization also provides education retention programmes that empower children to lead productive, successful and happy lives because when children are educated, entire communities attain the knowledge and tools to break the cycle of poverty, for themselves and for future generations. RCEA also supports marginalized families with children desperate for surgical and medical needs by providing them with productive resources that enable them to generate a sustainable source of income to increase.
