Emergency work up Colby Glen Road today, apologies for any brief road blocks. An Elm had uprooted and was precariously leaning over the road obstructing hgv and bus movements. Supported only by an old stone wall, the only safe option was to get it on the ground ASAP.

We've been working next to (and over) the main road in Laxey the last few days, a tidy up and re-pollard beside an old boat house became slightly more involved when dangerous funghi were discovered at the base of the stem. The funghi here were Ganaderma, the fruiting bodies forming brackets indicating dead matter in roots or stem, and more seriously Kretzchameria deusta, also known as "Brittle Cinder" where once the fruiting bodies are seen (a black mould like substance creeping up the stem) the tree could already be dangerously weakened. As its name suggests its makes the wood extremely brittle and prone to catastrophic failure with no warning! If you see this on your trees, please get them inspected, the only sensible option here was to fell the infected trees.

Todays fun and games, a huge sad old monolith, who's weakened crown was blown down during last years storms. We had to rig down a large section that we utilised as a landing pad to protect the lawn from excessive ground damage. Shame to see such a huge old pine go, but its days were numbered
