This fine gentleman, almost certainly a 17th century Dutchman, perhaps a near contemporary of Rembrandt, recently visited our workshop at Spectrum for framing. This painting, has just been restored and shows clearly that it was painted on two planks of wood, as was common in that period. Of course, there were not composite materials like mdf, plywood or blockboard available to artists to make larger paintings on a single surface. To prevent the pair of prepared wood panels from curling over time, elaborate cradling on the back was used, as can be seen in the second photograph. A fine piece of craftsmanship.

Now and then we get some special or unusual things to frame. Here's a book given to a friend by the late Tony O'Malley who has dedicated it with a little pencil portrait of the gentleman on the fly leaf. We proposed to the owner not to frame the page, as was his intention but to mount the book intact as we felt this is part of its story. There is a little shelf built into the frame which is lined with a dark red suede board
