#onthisday April 10th 1900 the last hanging takes place in Waterford City. Patrick Dunphy was aged 74 and living on the Yellow Road when his wife died in June 1899. On September 19th his 10 year old son Edward died, and on December 19th his 12 year old son John passed away. After it was discovered that he had collected on a life insurance policy he had on his children their deaths were more thoroughly investigated. The bodies of his sons were found to have enough strychnine in them to kill 10 people. Dunphy offered no plea in his defence and the jury took just 10 minutes to find him guilty of the murder of his sons. He was hanged inside Waterford Jail at 8am on this day 1900
