The Sirona Orthophos XG3D CT scanner has arrived at Abbeytrinity Dental!!! This CT scanner, one of only a few in Ireland and the first in Galway, gives Dr John Burke the ability to create highly accurate 3D models of a person’s bone and gums prior to placement of dental implants. Not only does it assist in determining whether implants are a suitable option for you, if they are the best option for you, Dr Burke can then combine the CT scan with the 3D intraoral scan from the CEREC Omnicam to create a computer aided ‘surgical guide’ for implant placement. Using a surgical guide means the implant surgery is as accurate as possible in all aspects and this increases the success, aesthetics and long-term prognosis of the dental implants placed using them as a guide. According to Dr Burke, in the past dental implants were placed in the positions thought best based on 2D xrays or CT images from older machines, and while this worked well and was the standard of the time, computer guided surgery has arrived. Technology in dentistry is evolving at a fast pace, and now 3D modelling and computer generated surgical guides are considered the best way forward. The Sirona CT unit has a lower xray dosage but still gives amazing detail and all the software integrates to produce the surgical guide. ‘We want to be able to offer our patients the best there is, the gold standard, and for implants this will be ‘computer guided implant surgery’. For anyone considering dental implants, Abbeytrinity Dental is offering a limited number of free implant consultations with CT scans (if appropriate). Call 093-6033 to register your interest in this very special offer.
