LOOK! A great window display at the Liber, our independent Sligo music and bookshop for the Maritime Heritage Weekend. If you would like to get a signed copy of any of these books available at Liber the Authors Michael Smith, Joe McGowan and David Butler will be in Rosses Point this weekend. Michael has published several fantastic books on polar exploration, including a wonderful new biography on Shackleton. Michael's book for younger readers, Iceman – Tom Crean, has been adopted onto the schools' curriculum in Ireland. David Butler illustrated of Shackleton – The Voyage of the James Caird published by The Collins Press. Sligo author Joe Mc Gowan is best known as a chronicler of his home place, as folklorist and local historian, especially of Inishmurray Island. Anyone visiting Rosses Point for this weekends Maritime Heritage Weekend will enjoy a visit to Harry's Bar. The huge collection of maritime objects in this pub has been described in a Heritage Council audit of Maritime Collections as follows : COLLECTION: Harry’s Bar LOCATION: Rosses Point, County Sligo REPOSITORY: Private CATEGORY: General maritime COLLECTION TYPE: Memorabilia CONDITION: Good PUBLIC ACCESS: Yes DESCRIPTION: Large collection of maritime memorabilia. The collection includes many brass artefacts, such as portholes, and a diving hard hat. There are also several models of ships and a selection of photographs by Cecil Ewing, a keen photographer who took pictures of many of the ships entering Sligo Harbour.ihttp://www.heritagecouncil.ie/fileadmin/user_upload/Publications/Marine/maritime_collections.pdf.

Tickets to the talk on Saturday 22 October 3-5pm by Dr John Treacy ''70 Years of The Irish Naval Service & The Repatriation of WB Yeats to Drumcliff Aboard Macha'' and Joe McGowan ''The Wreck of The Carricks of Whitehaven'' are available at Austie's. On Friday night 7.30 - 9.30pm, the opening talk for The Maritime Heritage Weekend is by Michael Smith ''Ireland's Antarctic Explorers'' and Eugene Furlong ''Shackleton's Last Ship & The Cabin of The Quest'' will be in the wonderful setting of Sligo Yacht Club in Rosses Point. Tickets are €10 and are available through Eventbrite on the Maritime Heritage Weekend facebook page, or at the door. On Sunday 23rd 12-2pm Auriel Robinson of Seatrailswill speak about ''Sligo's Coastal Heritage, The Armada & The Escape of Captain Francesco De Cuellar.'' Jarlath Cunnanne will retrace ''The Voyage of The James Caird, Northabout on Franklin's Trail and The Northeast Passage Over The Roof of Russia.''
