Creating Solutions: The Key to Conflict Resolution In our opinion the key to conflict resolution is creating solutions to the problem. This is a collaborative means of resolving disputes and is rooted in each party’s commitment to achieving a mutually satisfactory common solution. Creating solutions has the advantage of increasing understanding and also of easing the resolution of future problems. This is especially important for relationships that are mutually beneficial and/or interdependent. Here are some tips for when engaging in Creating Solutions: 1) Think thoughts that move you towards conflict resolution eg. ‘I will put my assumptions 2) Pick your moment-wait for the appropriate time when emotions are calm and the other person has the time in which to focus on the problem 3) Begin with an issue that will be easy to resolve and work up to more difficult ones 4) Highlight opportunities for future accomplishments rather than past shortcomings and failures 5) List every idea no matter how unrealistic and list the pros and cons of each 6) Be willing to compromise – you are looking for a solution, not a victory! 7) Avoid ‘winners’ and ‘losers’. Making the first move to break a stalemate or trying in some way to make amends to the other person is an effective and powerful way to manage conflict. Taking the first step to break the impasse is difficult, it requires you taking a risk. Conflict is emotional. Directly acknowledge the other persons emotions and never say that s/he is wrong to feel that way. If you are the cause of another’s emotional distress, admit your responsibility and sincerely apologise.
