Public hospitals 'inefficient and ineffective' - Consultant
A Consultant Ophthalmologist based at the Mater and Temple Street Children's Hospitals in Dublin has said the Minister of Health needs to address issues at hospital level before anything can be changed regarding waiting lists. Reacting to Simon Harris's five-point plan to tackle waiting lists, Professor Michael O'Keeffe said he has "heard it all before" and nothing has been solved. Galway Independent - A driving force
Galway teenage medical entrepreneur Edel Browne is revolutionising potential treatment methods for people with Parkinson’s disease through a new, innovative device. Free Feet Medical is the brainchild of 19-year-old Edel from Athenry, a third year Biotechnology student at NUI Galway. ‘Free Feet’ is an innovative device which uses laser assistive technology to help Parkinson’s patients. The start-up’s developing technology aims to reduce ‘gait freeze’ in Parkinson’s sufferers, a common and debilitating symptom of the condition, by shining a special light in front of the foot. The device has the potential to improve both the mobility and quality of life for people suffering from Parkinson’s disease globally. Ms Browne says she first became interested in this particular area as she has a neighbour with Parkinson’s. Her brother also works in the neurology department in University Hospital Galway.

Tattoos to 3D printing: five inventions that will revolutionise healthcare
Five inventions that will revolutionise healthcare Most people know they are sick or their health is at risk because of symptoms – pain, temperature, swelling, rash etc. These are the alarm bells that drive people to doctors. However, new epidemics like obesity and type 2 diabetes can start causing damage a long time before symptoms appear, and no alarms go off. Today we can meet these challenges with new allies. Beyond the health and fitness uses, the new world of wearables (external surface sensors) and, in time, digestibles (nanoparticle sensors that can transmit information from within), offer the opportunity to restore control back to us. Advances in biotechnology as well as material science offer us alternatives never before dreamed possible.
Big Brother Is Watching Your Health
What do you think? Big Brother Employers ?? More and more companies are looking to obtain wearables or provide other tech for their employees in order to keep them healthier – and in turn lower the cost burden of health insurance. Some of the programs appear to be working – people are exercising more, sleeping better and seeing other improvements. But some people are worried about the implications – does this turn our employers into Big Brother of Health, making sure we eat right to keep our jobs?
