SHARING A MEMORY.... As a photographer most people that know my work over the years think of me as only a "fashion photographer" quite understandable I suppose through all the magazine spreads and brochures, constantly working with our top designers, including the awards I have won in that field - but that isn't so. I have always considered my life as a photographer to enjoy the countless disciplines that this wonderful creative medium has allowed me to explore. SPIRIT OF PLACE - A peculiar sense of Irishness. The following images "Spirit of Place" taken 21 years ago is a good example to illustrate something else other than me being just a fashion photographer, In this personal project I wanted to produce a collection of "sporting" type activities that are very peculiar to Ireland that have been around for over a century and still exist today the finished images I wanted to have that Victorian early photographic look of platinum/photogravure finish very much in vogue at the time. Each of the 6 images shown here (12 in total) was a mini production with the demands of - location - set design - models - wardrobe props and styling - as well as choreography. These six images alone took one day each covering six locations hundreds of miles apart plus pre production. I shot the images on film and printed the first set of prints using my own toning recipes. Also the use of a tripod is very important for this type of work because the camera has to see the stage setting and stay put allowing for instructions without changing it's position. The Galway hookers sailing into Dalkey Sound is a good example they passed through it several times until I got the composition right using walkie talkies, the camera staying put on the tripod is a good example. "Rowing Fours - Lough Gill County Sligo" Lough Gill in County Sligo is one of the few lakes in Ireland where the use of traditional "rowing fours" boats are still quite popular and several clubs are quite active in keeping the sport alive and there are several regattas held during the season. This image is very pictorialist and as one can see there was considerable prepping casting and styling needed for it. This time my assistant was in the foreground dressed as a Victorian gentleman feeding the signets and observing the two crews about tostrut their stuff, note Benbullben in the background. A signed limited edition of all of these images printed on 100% cotton rag paper using pigment inks are available for sale. "Handball Alley Doocastle County Sligo" This handball alley is said to be the oldest in Ireland? has been a friend of mine for over 30 years,I can't think of how many times I have driven past it on the back road to Foxford and the North West. Once there was a hand ball alley in just about every rural town in Ireland. Today although handball is a minority traditional sport most of the handball alleys are in neglect and more often than not used as lean to shelters for tractors and such. A signed limited edition of all of these images printed on 100% cotton rag paper using pigment inks are available for sale. "Greyhounds on The Bog of Allen" Seen here a breeder with greyhounds on the worked bog - sometimes in hard weather they run the dogs where the flat firmish ground is still soft enough under paw as to do no harm. This vast expanse of commercial bog is in County Offaly with the power station of Rhode in the distance. A signed limited edition of all of these images printed on 100% cotton rag paper using pigment inks are available for sale. "Galway Hookers Sailing into The Moonlight Dalkey Sound" When I wanted to take this image it was quite late in the year and the only "hookers" (the type of sailing craft) still afloat anywhere in Ireland -two of them - were in Dublin. It took two crews and almost a full day to get them to sail in harmony from their berths in Dublin's Ringsend to Dalkey and Coliemore Harbour about 12 killometers away under sail. This was the hardest of all the images to get the final balance and mood, after several passes through the sound I got the image and added my assistant to stand in the foreground wearing the right look complete with lobster pots. A signed limited edition of all of these images printed on 100% cotton rag paper using pigment inks are available for sale. "Tramore Races" Tramore Racecourse in county Waterford was one of those very special small pretty little courses that remained very popular for that very reason and describes about that wonderful sense of Irishness. This image was taken almost 40 years ago when I was privilliged to be a guest and invited up onto the camera tower, it was the middle of the summer and suddenly just before the first race from nowhere came the most incredible Monsoon of a downpour. All the horses jockeys et al rushed back from the parade ring for cover. This image says it all and is a little out of sync with the other images time wise but still hasn't dated. The racecourse is no more and will be sadly missed. A signed limited edition of all of these images printed on 100% cotton rag paper using pigment inks are available for sale.
