About Knock
__________________________________________________________
Knock (Irish: An Cnoc, meaning The Hill – is now more generally known in Irish as Cnoc Mhuire, “Hill of (the Virgin) Mary”) is a small town in County Mayo, Ireland whose notability derives from the Knock Shrine where the Virgin Mary, together with St Joseph and St John the Evangelist, appeared in 1879.

In the 20th century, it became one of Europe’s major Catholic Marian shrines, alongside Lourdes and Fatima. With a population of around 700, Knock plays host to one and a half million pilgrims who visit Knock Shrine annually.

It was visited by Pope John Paul II, a supporter of devotion to the Virgin Mary, in 1979 to commemorate the centenary of the apparition.

Mother Teresa of Calcutta visited the Shrine in June of 1993.

Today, there is something special about Knock that embraces serenity, the warm friendly handshake, the genuineness that touches the visitor - whatever your spiritual persuasion, wherever your background or creed.

There is much to explore in the surrounding areas – small towns and villages, historic sites, shops and pubs that offer a window into the past and an insight into a different way of life. This unique local culture has remained steadfast and traditional in spite of the hurried and often frantic “modern” pace of life that swirls around us today.

You are truely welcome to Knock.
