Wolfe Tone St. bridge (formerly water street bridge) It dates from the 18th/19th cent but possibly has much earlier origins, It was built over the widest and most shallow stretch of the river Lúbach and led to what was known as "The White Knights country" Today the river flows beneath 2 arches, but as you can see below that it is actually a 5 arched(6 possibly) bridge making it a substantial but hidden structure... Blossom Gate,Kilmallock: The last standing gate of 5 that commanded entry into the medieval town, and one of the finest examples remaining in Ireland. It's name derives from the Irish word for flower "Bláth" and the old French word for word gate or entrance "Porte" The use of the French term is a good example of the language spoken by the Norman builders of Kilmallock...for they spoke French and not the English we'd expect today. Flemish (from modern Belgium) was another language in common use within the town walls. The gate dates from the 16th cent when Kilmallock was at the very height of its prosperity and power under the Earl's of Desmond. In the 1970's a vote was held by Limerick County Council to have the gate knocked so heavy transport trucks could gain access to the town. Kilmallock's Collegiate church.....It's bell tower is dated to possibly the 11th cent making it the oldest structure in the town! The church has played host to a gathering of the Irish medieval parliament, the surrender of the leader of the Desmond rebellion James FitzMaurice Fitzgerald and even hosted a papal representative!! It contains some very intricate tombs of various nobels, the finest being the tomb of The Knight of the Golden Spur. It continued as a place of Protestant worship until 1935 when it was unfortunately burned down in an arson attack.
