The Gavin Glynn Foundation
Description
The Gavin Glynn Foundation has been created to continue Gavin's legacy by helping other children and their families in Ireland while they battle cancer. Gavin was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer known as Embroyonal Rhabdomyosarcoma on 19th October 2011 at the age of 18 months old.
He had a small lump on his bum cheek which we then found out was a large tumor which was covering his whole pelvic region and had also spread to his lungs. Rhabdomyosarcoma is a cancerous (malignant) tumor of the muscles that are attached to the bones.
After 6 months of intensive chemotherapy in March 2012 they were then able to operate and remove the tumor, which was amazing news but they, chemotherapy alone was not enough to stop it coming back.
We then were sent to Switzerland for Proton Therapy treatment, which is a special type of radiation. He had to have 28 sessions of this radiation every day, so the whole family moved over there for 7 weeks.
When we returned to Ireland is planned for more chemotherapy until April 2013, but unfortunately we found out the day before Gavin’s 3rd birthday in May that the cancer has returned.
In July we were accepted by a hospital in Amsterdam to receive a new radiation therapy called Brachytherapy and for Gavin to have multiple surgeries to remove the tumor again, which was located in Gavin’s pelvis.
But on 11th March this year we were told that there is another tumor growing close to the area that was treated already and also a new tumor on Gavin's Bladder.
We were advised that surgery and more radiotherapy is not an option in Ireland and that no other treatment would work so we travelled to Houston Texas were Gavin attended MD Anderson Hospital for HIPEC Surgery to remove his tumors.
The operation successfully removed all the tumors but 3 weeks later they started to grow back.
In August 2014 we returned back to Ireland but sadly on the 21st October 2014 Gavin passed away after 3 years fighting.
We plan to continue Gavin’s legacy now under The Gavin Glynn Foundation.
We are a register charity in Ireland. RCN - 20106959

***Please read below story sent to us from Baby Ronan mum Helen. The Gavin Glynn Foundation helped Ronan and his family when they needed to travel to Essen over Christmas for Treatment.*** ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ronan was diagnosed with a tumor at the base of his brain in September 2016 at the age of just 14 months old. His first sign of the tumor were a slight tilt in his head for a couple of weeks, but then he began to vomit once every morning first thing for about a week so we brought him to the emergency department for a scan and the tumor was identified immediately. The type of tumor was ependymoma. After a 10-hour successful surgery in Temple Street Hospital, follow-up radiation in Essen was recommended. The treatment was organised by Ronan’s medical and surgical team in Ireland but we were completely on our own with logistics of moving our family to Germany for 8 weeks. Three days before we were due to fly we had not managed to locate a place to stay; the Gavin Glynn foundation stepped in, found us a place to live, organised equipment for Ronan and put us in touch with other families already in Essen and even helped make our Christmas abroad with two small children enjoyable! I cannot adequately express our gratitude for the support and assistance we received at such a difficult time and we continue to keep in contact with John and the Gavin Glynn Foundation as to Ronan’s progress. Childhood Cancer Statistics in Ireland - The Gavin Glynn Foundation
As part of awareness into Childhood Cancer The Gavin Glynn Foundation compiled some information we would like to share. ———————————————————————————— ***Number of cancers diagnosed in children aged 0-16 years at diagnosis supplied by NCRI Jan 2017 (National Cancer Registry Ireland).*** ———————————————————————————— Although we have identified a number of lifestyle changes that can help to prevent many adult cancers developing cancer, we don’t know how to prevent or what causes most childhood cancers. We do know some factors that increase risk in adult cases, but most children with cancer don’t have any of these risk factors. Even though cancer is not common in children, it is the most common cause of death from illness in children between the ages of 1 to 16 year olds. Percentages of children dying from various cancers have gone down, the proportion of childhood deaths from cancer overall has gone up… The number of new cases is growing every year… In 2014 there was 233 new cases diagnosed childhood cancer cases in Ireland. In 2014 ** 18** children aged 0-14 died from Cancer in Ireland alone….. It is frightening to see how much the numbers are growing year on year. A huge 6% increase from 2013 to 2014 of number of children diagnosed with Cancer in Ireland... Each year in Europe, 6,000 young people die from cancer, and two-thirds of those who survive suffer from treatment-related side effects. Despite improving survival rates, Cancer is still the Number 1 cause of death by disease in children aged one year and over in Europe. In addition to the side effects of treatment, five years after diagnosis these survivors still have a risk of death that is higher than that of the general population. We The Gavin Glynn Foundation will continue to fight for all children with Cancer in Ireland and their families and help in whatever way we can. #neverevergivingup #ourkidsdeservebetter
