Next Yoga & Mindfulness retreat : 'Making Space' October bank holiday weekend. This retreat provides a space for you to take time out to focus on your own self care. A time to look after your body and mind. You will work out on a physical and mental level. “Through mindful yoga we can come to see how much the mind’s incessant noise, the vritti (fluctuations of mind), keeps us from being truly in touch with and accepting things as they are in the body and in the world. And we can come to know how valuable it is to recognize the waves of the mind for what they are and hold them in awareness without losing touch with the silence and the stillness, the heart of yoga that is always lying beneath the surface of the mind. It is available to us in any moment we can relax our judging and our striving, and surrender to clear seeing and awakening” (Jon Kabat-Zinn) What is Yoga? Yoga is a physical science which gives us increased flexibility and strength, curing, relieving or preventing injuries, aches and pains and stiffness. You don’t have to be flexible to do Yoga. A regular practice improves posture, breathing and detoxifies the body. The coordination of breath and movement builds inner heat which allows the muscles to become more malleable and the postures less of an effort. As we move through the yoga postures each and every organ in the body gets stimulated, this enables stagnant blood to be put back into circulation within the body and allows the organs to be flushed with fresh oxygenated blood, improving the function of our organs. The practice frees up blockages in our breathing pathways and energy pathways resulting in increased energy levels and clarity of mind. Yoga is also a mental science, fitness training for the mind. It is a Mindfulness practice. What is Mindfulness? Mindfulness is learning to direct our attention to our experience as it unfolds, with kindness and acceptance. Mindfulness training gives us practical tools and skills which increase our capacity to really savor the precious moments of our lives. This training also empowers us to explore and respond more skillfully, rather than react, to what we find difficult and stressful in our daily lives. The retreat explores how to practice with awareness, to anchor the attention in the body and the breath, to recognise emotions and thoughts as they arise, how they distract us and how they pass away. Practicing in this way empowers us to notice the coming and goings of our thoughts, sensations, moods, feelings, reactions, impulses without getting entangled in them. During the retreat you will develop an awareness of the breath, through guided meditation, breathing exercises and yoga postures. You learn to notice how mindfulness of breath affects the quality of our physical practice. During the physical practice of yoga emphasis will also be placed on alignment, strengthening typical weak muscle groups and stretching typical tight muscle groups. Integrating meditative awareness with the physical postures, we mindfully approach more challenging postures from various hatha yoga traditions. The morning yoga class will be more dynamic with a focus on alignment. The evening yoga class will be restorative. The formal mindfulness practices in this retreat include Yoga, breathing techniques, meditation, walking meditation and body scan. The informal practices are the link which enable us to integrate this training into our daily lives. All practices nurture the qualities of focus, stability, ease and an inner smile. This course would be of interest to keen beginners as well as experienced practitioners of yoga and mindfulness. Cost of retreat: €320 This includes yoga and mindfulness sessions, meditation sessions, mindfulness workshops, accommodation and organic nutritious food.

About the teacher. Darina O’ Shea became interested in meditation while living in Korea. She then attended a 10 day Vipasanna silent meditation retreat in India. This was followed by a chance meeting with Bharat Thakur in New Delhi who is an internationally acclaimed yoga master. She began her Yoga training with Bharat Thakur. She continued her training in Barcelona with Xavier Sola and Pilar Ruberte. She was further inspired by teachers such as Tomas Zorzo, Danilo Hernandez, Nicolas Evans, Bridget Woods Kramer and Donna Farhi. The styles of yoga that she has now trained in include shivananda, ashtanga, iyenger, anusara, yin yoga and Somatic yoga. Meditation was always apart of her yoga practice. After 7 years training and teaching in Barcelona, Darina returned home to Ireland to open her own yoga studio and retreat centre just outside Kenmare. She continued to deepen her own practice by attending yoga and meditation retreats and workshops. In recent years she qualified as a Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction Trainer. She graduated from the Institute of Mindfulness Based Approaches. Combining the practice of yoga and mindfulness is a natural extension of these two practices, which share the same roots. Mindfulness meditation is as much a practice of the body as yoga is a practice of the mind. Darina offers weekly yoga classes and 8-week MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) courses in a purpose built Geodesic Dome. She has completed courses run by the Mindfulness In Schools Project (MISP) in Dublin and London. She now introduces mindfulness into schools.
