Catholic Church We are a community of 4 priests. We belong to a male Religious Order called Augustinians. The Augustinians have been in Galway since 1500, so in the year 2000 we celebrated the 500th anniversary of the arrival of the first Augustinians in Galway. They had their first monastery in what is now Forthill Cemetery by Lough Attalia. Our names are: John Hughes (Mayo), Des Foley (Wexford), Declan Deasy
(Waterford), and John Whelan (Wexford).
We all work here in St. Augustine's Church and Parish. The Church of St. Augustine, built in 1855 and renovated in 2005, is located on Middle Street, at the bottom of Buttermilk Lane. It is a popular devotional Church for the people of Galway. Many people come with their difficulties -and gratitude- to the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Counsel.
Since 1971 St. Augustine's has been a Parish Church. The parish itself is small geographically. But its population has grown dramatically in recent years, due mainly to the construction of so many new apartments in the city centre. The apartments on The Long Walk, The New Docks area, Merchant's Road, Spanish Arch area, Kirwan's Lane, Bridge Street, Fisherman's Wharf, and Market Street are all in St. Augustine's Parish.
So we have many young people in our Parish who must find it very, very difficult to feel part of this inner city community. I presume many of you go home to your families at weekends. Consequently, your contact with your city parish here would be rare enough. Our Newsletter is our effort to get in touch with you, and to get you in touch with the permanent residents of the inner city. We will drop it through your door every week and publish it on our own Website. It is, essentially, the leaflet handed out to the congregations at Sunday Masses, though with some variations. You may not be aware of this, but a rather vibrant community exists on your doorstep. A hub of activity is Ozanam House on Augustine Street. This is a community centre, run by the St. Vincent de Paul Society. Many voluntary groups meet there. These people are always looking for helpers. Tagaste House, at 4 Augustine Street, is a support centre for young people with difficulties adjusting socially. Again, they need helpers. The parishioners meet every Thursday night in the Priory at 8.00. Finally, we are here if you need us. Don't hesitate to seek us out.

The Annual Forthill Mass and blessing of the graves will take place on Sunday (6th November). Mass will be celebrated at 12.30pm.

The Annual Commemoration of the Faithful Departed will take place on Wednesday November 2nd, All Souls Day, at 8pm in St. Augustine's Church. We welcome parishioners and choir from St. Nicholas’ Collegiate Church who will be joining us.

Don't forget St Augustine’s Parish Outing: Sunday, 28th August 2016 This year we are going to visit Ballintubber Abbey & The Foxford Woolen Mills. The bus will depart Merchants Road at 11.45 am SHARP. The cost is €20 euro per person, (inclusive of entrance charges and dinner). The Parish will pay the cost of the bus. Booking open now at the Parish Office, €20 per head.
CHURCH CONCERT An evening of inspirational story and song (with sacred singer Denise Hagan) will take place here in St. Augustine’s Church on Friday August 19th at 7.30pm. Tickets €15. Bookings: Mary 085-7116565. Proceeds to Church Organ Restoration Fund.
Our friends in St Nicholas Collegiate Church would like your help on Sunday July 3rd: They are recording a service, in Irish and English for RTE to be broadcast on 7th August. So anyone with a cúpla focal would be very welcome! If anyone would like to come, and be part of the congregation, we’ve to be in place by 2.30 and the recording is at 3pm. It should be over by 3.45.
LENTEN FAITH NOURISHMENT “Re-discovering Vatican II” Fifty years ago, over 2,000 Bishops, theologians and lay participants from 116 countries gathered for one of the most important events in history, influential then and a lively topic of discussion still. Each session will include a 25 minute video presentation followed by a discussion. The presenters are all members of the Catholic Theological Union, Chicago. The first session in this series is‘ Big Perspectives on a Big meeting’. This weeks presenter is Rev. Stephen Bevans PhD. This WEDNESDAY 17th Feb at 7.30pm.
On Wednesday February17th, we will begin a Faith Nourishment Series for the remaining weeks of Lent. This will consist of a DVD presentation on a theological topic, fol- lowed by a discussion. This will take place in the large room in the Priory at 7.30pm. Watch out for further details...
Choir seeks new members: Have you ever sung in a choir? Would you like to reacquaint yourself with the joy of choral singing? As part of its ongoing development under its new director Dr. Ramin Haghjoo, the Augustinian Choir is seeking new members especially sopranos and altos .
