We received some interesting emails last night, and I would like to thank you all for your interest in the Sliabh Liag Distillery. I must therefore, re-emphasise that this group was not set up by any member or relative of the Sliabh Liag Distillery development group nor do we have any personal association in the development. This page was set up by local people who are speaking from experience, not to "promote", but rather to create awareness of the struggle that the youth and young families of Carrick and the surrounding areas are having to deal with and to highlight how vital it is to attain secure job creation in the area. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and everyones experiences of unemployment will differ and I am merely referring to my own personal experiences in my comments, trying to highlight the severity of this situation and help people to understand what life has been like for us affected families. We are a group of local people who had to emigrate for work, with no hope of returning. People who have experienced first hand the effects of unemployment, in particular the adverse effect it has on younger men. In my experience, joblessness, and financial strain, was the underlying factor in the deterioration of my close family members mental health. In fact I have witnessed several happy, healthy, hardworking men, lose their jobs as small scale fisherman, (another unrighteous hardship forced upon Local men, but that's a discussion for another time), and drift into depression and all of the repercussions that brings. Out of the 5 young men that I can personally speak about, there was a similar underlying pattern that lead to their deaths. Job-loss, financial difficulties, boredom, depression, addiction, feelings of helplessness and unworthiness. Five young men from one area in the space of 5/6 years is too many. I just can't help feel that If my close family member wasn't left unemployed and so desperate then the chances are he wouldn't have sunk so low into depression and life would/could have been very different for a lot of people around here today. The statistics are for too high for one small community. I strongly believe that if these lads had the chance of a full time job then some of them, if not all of them would be alive today. The Distillery is effectively going to create over 60 jobs in time and the majority of the workforce will consist of young men that are fit for the heavy physical work that's involved in the distilling making process. Having a full time secure job provides personal security. It offers hope and a brighter future but more importantly it helps to reduce mental health issues and feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy. So whilst my post may seem quite emotive it is based on the facts as I've experienced things. Sharing my experiences was not meant to try and hurt anyone or make anyone feel upset. We simply want An Taisce and the objectors to think about their decision on a wider perspective, and try to understand the severity of the situation and gain an insight of what life has been like for families like us over the years, and reconsider their position and retract their objection. It's also important to mention that I know some of those people who are objecting and they are good living people, we don't hold a personal gripe with anyone, some of the points raised in objection are worth a listen, animals and the environment do matter. However, human life and the mental health and well being of a community should always be paramount. We desperately need jobs!! Don't forget to like and share Our Support Sliabh Liag Distillery page. Go raibh maith agat.

This page has been set up by a group of local people around Carrick, Co. Donegal to urge An Taisce and the local people; who have appealed the decision to An Bord Pleanála to grant planning for the distillery, to retract it. According to a survey commissioned by the National Youth Council of Ireland, over one quarter of Irish households have seen a close family member emigrate in the past two years as unemployment remains at an unacceptable high. It is estimated that in the last 4 years over 300,000 people have emigrated from Ireland alone with a large (percentage to population) of those hailing from Donegal. The county is said to have seen total migration estimated at 6,731 people over the past five years. This, in turn, has contributed to the fact that Donegal has also experienced the largest decrease in population over the past five years. The population of the county has decreased by 1.5 per cent to 158,755. In April 2011 Donegal had a population of 161,137, and unemployment is unfortunately a major contributing factor. Donegal needs a major injection of secure full time jobs and The Sliabh Liag Distillery is set to create over 60 jobs, offering the younger generation a blessed opportunity to settle at home, bringing much needed hope to the unemployed youth in South West Donegal. Despite rising emigration and decreasing population, Donegal had an estimate 26 suicides in 2015, that is twice the number that died on our roads that year. While statistics won’t be officially tallied until after inquests are completed for the people concerned, we have been told by HSE insiders that the suicide death rate is now an ‘epidemic’ and there is a major demand for resources to deal with the crisis. Unemployment and financial difficulties are unquestionably an underlying factor in a high number of these tragic deaths and according to Anne Sheridan, Suicide Resource Officer for the HSE: “We believe that the whole county has a role to play, and we all need to be aware of what we can do individually and as part of our community to promote mental health and reduce suicide”. Job creation is one way of offering support to the County. The Sliabh Liag Distillery will offer over 60 much needed jobs, helping to reduce the scores of young people that are leaving the area every year. It will increase tourism to the area and can only have a positive effect on local business and the wider community. We are asking you to like our FB page in support of the Sliabh Liag Distillery and as a County we trust in God that the people opposing this development will have a serious rethink and a change of heart and retract their opposition, and we hope that an Board Pleanála will appreciate how vital this project is to our area and grant full planning permission to this amazing development. Go raibh maith agat.
