If pets made New Years Resolutions! Year after year, one of the most common New Year’s resolutions we make is to lose weight, and this year why don't we share that goal with our dogs and cats. The new year presents a perfect opportunity to create regular exercise routines for our pets and begin to effectively manage their eating habits to avoid obesity. Below are simple steps you can take to help regulate your pet’s weight: Avoid feeding your pet table scraps. Keep a consistent diet by monitoring the amount of food you give your pet. Regulate the amount the treats you give your pet. Establish a healthy and fun exercise schedule. Come and ask us about our weight management clinic. If your pet needs to loose a few inches we have loads of ideas to help them do so. We also have a weighing scales in the waiting room for anyone who wants to check their pets weight, free to use as often as you want.

Christmas can be a busy time with visiting friends and relatives so make sure your pet doesn't make an escape in the commotion. make sure that they are wearing a collar with a tag and make sure that all microchip details are up to date just in case they slip out. If you plan to throw a holiday party, consider leaving a cute, festive note on the food table to remind guests not to share holiday treats with the pets. Drinking cups (especially those filled with alcohol) and plates should be kept out of reach of your pets. During parties, some pets can get a bit stressed out, so have a safety spot available. This location should be away from the festivities and should have fresh water, a couple of toys and a comfortable place to sleep.

The finishing touches to every home at Christmas often come in the form of plants and flowers; however, certain types of plants are highly toxic to pets and must be kept well out of reach. Some of the plants your pets should avoid are in the attached picture.

Christmas is a time of giving, but some of us tend to get carried away when it comes to providing our pets with treats. Many human foods can cause serious illness to our four legged friends, take caution when choosing what treats to give your pet. If you want to give your pet treats, purchase specially made treats for pets or give them small amounts of plain cooked meat. Don't give them small cooked bones as they can shatter which can cause irritation to their intestines or get stuck and cause an obstruction. See the picture below of some of the more important toxic ingredients which could be hidden in sauces, cakes and pies you could be thinking of sharing with your pet this Christmas.

Christmas is most definitely a wonderful time of year but there are a lot of dangers associated with it for pets. From now until Christmas we will share some tips to keep your pets safe and to ensure they also have a happy Christmas! Christmas Decorations bring the house alive, but if you have pets it can be a bit tricky as there are many risks such as swallowing decorations or injuring themselves on broken baubles or fallen trees. Make sure the tree is securely in place in case your pet decides to jump or pull at it. Don't hang edible treats such as candy canes or chocolate on your tree they may be attractive to your pet and harmful if consumed! Replace glass baubles with plastic to avoid them shattering. Make sure the baubles on the tree are too big to be swallowed. Replace tinsel with paper chains or bead chains and keep other Christmas decorations out of their reach. If you have a real tree sweep up the needles as they can cause irritation to pads. Keep electric cables and fairy lights out of pets reach as if chewed they can cause serious problems.
