Description
Professional Counselling & Psychotherapy Seminars Ireland Our Goal With PCPSI
The vision of PCPSI is to invite leaders from the related fields of Attachment, Trauma,Addiction and Neuroscience to Ireland, so that we, as trained counsellors, psychotherapists and students can benefit from internationally recognised trainers, authors and practitioners. Through our annual seminars, we hope that experts from these disciplines can provide participants with greater awareness of addiction issues and the effects of traumatic stress on children, adolescents and adults. With this knowledge, it is envisaged that we, as a collective, can learn and develop as professionals and eventually integrate these new approaches into our own work, enhancing our capacity to be more compassionate, thoughtful and competent caregivers.
Ultimately, PCPSI wants to be recognised as providers of high quality, professional seminars so that we can all develop and improve as practising counsellors. The objective of our seminar series is as follows:
ATTRACT THE VERY BEST
To invite internationally recognised trainers, authors and practitioners to Ireland, to provide engaging and thought-provoking seminars on current developments in Trauma
PROMOTE
To establish a greater awareness of the effects of traumatic stress on adults, adolescents and children. It is hoped that collectively engaging with such issues at the seminars will affect the way we approach these issues in the future.
INFLUENCE
Through these high quality seminars, it is hoped that dialogue begins on how the impact of traumatic experiences is explored and studied in Ireland
CONTRIBUTE
It is our vision to contribute, in some way, to the wealth of knowledge that already exists in the fields of Attachment, Trauma,Addiction and Neuroscience in Ireland.
COMMUNITY
As a result of the seminars, it is hoped that a network or working-group of practitioners is established, so that we can remain up-to-date on current developments in our fields.
ELIMINATE HIGH TRAVEL COSTS
By hosting high quality seminars in Ireland, students and professional counsellors and psychologists receive high quality training from leading international figures, without the expensive travel costs.

Music is an important component of the human experience - The use of music in culture has been a documented feature of the history of civilisations. The Polyvagal Theory provides a strategy to understand the mechanisms and processes that engage music and music therapy to improve social engagement behaviours, and to enhance the regulation of bodily and behavioural states. The theory provides insights that bridge music therapy to the nervous system and positive health outcomes. Dr. Stephen Porges on Face to Face Social Engagement
When dealing with educational or mental health difficulties, we can often be too "cognitive-centric" and not concerned enough with a persons ability to regulate behaviours and physiological states. Yet if we look at many of the basic problems in education and mental health, they have to do with state regulation issues. In this video, Dr. Stephen Porges argues that mobilising the social engagement system through the development of new neural networks is vital to state regulation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lxS3bv32-UY https://pcpsi.ie/event/stephen-porges/
Brain-body connection may ease autistic people’s social problems
***Polyvagal Theory and Autism suppport*** Many people with Autism have difficulty regulating their behaviour and emotions. Their initial reaction to threat is often anger, irritability and aggression. During the past 20 years, researchers have developed and tested an acoustic intervention, commercially available as the "Safe and Sound Protocol"; that is designed to engage the social engagement system. Through a better understanding of how the autonomic nervous system responds to cues of safety and threat, Stephen Porges' and colleagues, plan to design cost-effective and efficient therapies that retune autonomic function and optimize social engagement in people on the spectrum. For more information see below: https://www.spectrumnews.org/opinion/viewpoint/brain-body-connection-may-ease-autistic-peoples-social-problems/ We hope you'll join us at our seminar in September, where Dr. Porges will be discussing this, and much more: https://pcpsi.ie/product/stephen-porges-standard-ticket/

***History of Pairc Ui Chaiomh - Stephen Porges seminar venue*** Pairc Ui Chaoimh is a long-established sports ground and has been the headquarters of Cork city and county Gaelic Athletic Association activities since 1898. It was constructed on reclaimed land, originally existing as mudflats of the river lee. It is located approximately 2KM from Cork City, within the docklands in the scenic area of the marina. It also provides a beautiful view of Cork Harbour, the worlds second largest natural harbour. The park, as it is affectionately known to Corkonians, reopened in 2017 after a long redevelopment process. It is now capable of serving 14 county teams and clubs, colleges and schools, in hurling, football and camogie. Of course, the park also hosts concerts and academic seminars, and we look forward to welcoming you all to this historic venue for our upcoming event. https://pcpsi.ie/event/stephen-porges/

***Yoga and the Polyvagal Theory - At the intersection of Science, Philosophy and Spirituality*** "While much of modern Yoga practices focus primarily on physical postures and movement sequences, the traditional roots are centred on a philosophical path towards understanding the causes of suffering and alienation" The Polyvagal theory confirms that yoga can benefit health and well-being through an interaction of top-down (regulation of attention) and bottom up (breathing techniques and movement practices) processes, which can contribute to a reduction in the symptoms of conditions such as IBS, depression, addiction and PTSD. See below for details of our upcoming event, where Stephen Porges will discuss his Polyvagal Theory and how it can be applied: https://pcpsi.ie/event/stephen-porges/ In the meantime, learn more about the Polyvagal Theory and Yoga! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvUS7k9_orA https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnhum.2018.00067/full

"Research has demonstrated that the therapeutic relationship is central to positive change for clients in psychotherapy. Therapeutic presence begins with the therapist cultivating presence prior to meeting a client. To be therapeutically present requires therapists to be first grounded, centred, and steady as well as open and receptive to the whole of the clients experience. Effective therapists responsiveness, and use of intervention or technique emerges from this attuned in-the-moment connection and resonance with clients experience" In this article, Dr. Stephen Porges discusses the importance of "Therapeutic presence", and how it can be cultivated through an engagement with Polyvagal Theory. https://pcpsi.ie/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Therapeutic-Presence-and-Polyvagal-Theory-2014.pdf

***History of the Polyvagal Theory*** "Polyvagal theory was generated as an expansive brain-body model that emphasised the bidirectional communication between the brain and the body. The theory, with its strong evolutionary and developmental perspectives, was proposed as a framework to explore links among observable behaviours, psychological processes, and automatic states". However, I did not anticipate that the main impact of the theory would be to provide an understanding of how, after experiencing life threat, people's neural reactions were returned toward a defensive bias and they lost the resilience to return to a state of safety|" . In this short preface, Dr. Stephen Porges discusses the historical development of the Polyvagal Theory and how it became a powerful clinical aid in the treatment of trauma. https://pcpsi.ie/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/Prefac-from-ClinicalApplicationofPolyvagalTheory.pdf

The Pied Piper of Polyvagal Theory: Deb Dana
***This post will be of particular interest to nurses and other healthcare professionals*** "Polyvagal Theory provides nurses with new scientific understandings of the underlying neurophysiology of what happens during stress states, illness, and trauma. It expands health professionals response abilities to recognise shifts in the autonomic nervous system of self and others. Polyvagal Theory and the social engagement system provide a new platform for understanding person-to-person relational skills, cues of safety and caring that contribute to a patients recovery. In this video, Deirdre Fay and Deb Dana discuss Polyvagal Theory and its clinical applications. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0f3ErVPMV5w
