This year's conference will host a conversation with Dr. Ivor Browne. As Professor of Psychiatry at University College Dublin and Chief Psychiatrist to the (former) Eastern Health Board, Ivor Browne has consistently confronted orthodox thinking around our understanding and treatment of mental illness in Ireland and beyond. His views and ideas are both radical and practical, in equal measure, but his vision is also distinguished by the strong sense of compassion and empathy that imbues all his work. Now in his mid-Eighties, Ivor Browne continues to work in private practice and engage with social affairs with the customary energy and innovative thought that has marked out his distinguished pilgrimage of discovery. After a life negotiating the related streams of music and madness, Browne has achieved relative peace and discerned a new vision of the future which addresses the growing concerns of a global community in crisis. His hope for the future is chilling and radical, which he approaches with calm and resignation. Browne’s wisdom and hard-won experience stands as an inspirational bulwark against a contemporary epidemic of depression, despair and suicide, shining a light in a darkness little served by conventional medicine.
