Cork City Archery Club
Description
Cork City Archery Club is affiliated to Archery Ireland. The club welcomes new members of all ages and aims to promote and enhance the sport of Archery The present Cork City Archery Club is one of a series of rebirths of the same club which was first founded in the 1950s in Cork city. There is documented proof of the existence of a Cork City archery club in the 1950/1960 period (possible the first in the Rep.of Ireland) and again in the mid 1970s to late 1980s. Practice shoots and competitions were held in both these periods at the Cork Cricket Grounds on The Mardyke just of the Western Road.
The club then appeared to enter a period of hibernation for a number of years until it was reawakened by Jason Quigley. On his return from exile in Kilkenny, Jason together with a few other able souls managed to give the club a new lease of life and was subsequently reconstituted in August 1998. Other members like Dan O Shea from the 1980s period returned to the fold with training and shoots being relocated to new grounds namely the Delaney Hurling and Football Club.
During this period the club also welcomed into its membership the husband and wife team of Pat & Eugene O Sullivan, both of whom later took over the reins of the club. After years of Trojan work Pat and Eugene, aided and abetted by a hoard of newly recruited and eager archers brought the club further along its winding path to be reconstituted in May 2008 in light of new Sports/Legal & National Legislation.
Following this a new committee headed by “Mick de chair Geaney” a long lasting stalwart of the club set about bringing the club forward organising both indoor and outdoor training in Rathpeacon Community Centre and Kilcully Scouts Training Ground respectively. In the last number of years there has been a huge increase in the numbers seeking to be involved in a steadily growing Cork City Archery Club and the increasingly popular sport of archery. Many of our archers have been National Champions in both junior and senior categories and have represented Ireland at Euro nation’s level not to mention holding a number of past Irish records.
