A few photos from the seminar "How to Buy a Hereford Bull"
A successful night was held last Wednesday in the Munster Arms hotel in Bandon. Niall O’ Mahony chairperson of Irish Hereford Prime spoke about the type of Hereford bull farmers are looking for to produce quality calves with an ease of calving. He discussed the advantages of having a factory ready Hereford cross heifer or steer under 30 months for slaughter and displayed a factual presentation on the growth of Irish Hereford Prime using Hereford cross cattle produced locally and the benefits it is having on its members. Next Patrick Hickey delivered an in-depth speech on the type of Hereford bull being sought by dairy farmers. He had visited several farms and collected images of the Hereford bulls being used by the local breeders. He showed the different aspects important to different farmers when buying a bull such as their length and thickness. John O’ Connor was the last speaker who shared his opinions from the point of view of both a dairy and hereford breeder. He expressed his thoughts on the qualities important to dairy breeders when considering the purchase of a Hereford bull. He also revealed the most desirable traits he would look for in a hereford bull and the importance it is for a breeder to buy a bull that would suit his cows rather than his fields. Club Chairman John White closed the evening by conveying his gratitude to the speakers and to all who attended the information night.
Don't forget to call into us tonight at 8pm in the Munster arms hotel, Bandon. Looking forward to seeing you there!
