Lios na Gcon
Description
Lios-na-gCon is a Ringfort in Darrara, Clonakilty, West Cork, Ireland, which has been reconstructed on its original site. Lios na gCon, meaning ringfort of the hound, which is located on the grounds of Darrara Agricultural College near Clonakilty, is the only ringfort in this country reconstructed on its original site. There are an estimated 40,000 identifiable ringfort sites in Ireland today. In Co. Cork alone there are over 2000 recorded sites but only 26 have been excavated.
Originally built in the 10th century, the fort was a defended homestead for a family of up to 20 people who were farmers. It was a centre of mixed farming which was totally self-sufficient. It was first excavated from 1987 to 1989 by members of Macra na Feirme under the watchful eye of the Archaeological Department of UCC.
Friends of Lios na gCon, a voluntary group, are working to maintain the fort as it is a valuable educational, tourism and heritage resource.
