Travelling with Medication Tips Travelling with Medicines Travelling by Land or Air When travelling by land or air, medication should be transported in accordance with the storage recommendations in the package leaflet that is supplied with a particular prescription (i.e. package leaflet in box of medication). During air travel, the patient should carry their medication on board with them. Medication should not be packed in a checked suitcase due to the uncertainty of maintaining an appropriate temperature and the risk of lost luggage. Leave medication in its original packaging and have medication ready for security inspection. International Travel Transportation and storage of medication during international travel would be similar to domestic travel. For land travel, check the requirements of the visiting country prior to departure. For air travel, check with the airlines regarding regulations of the departing and destination countries regarding the transportation of prescription medications, including needles and syringes, prior to departure. A medical certificate, ideally in English, is recommended. Disposal Dispose of the used medication as instructed by a doctor, pharmacist or healthcare professional and in accordance with the package leaflet. A container made specifically for disposing of used syringes and needles (a sharps container) may be used.
