Mullein. Verbascum thapsus. Totally made up to discover this beauty when exploring this evening. I use Mullein flowers in my earache oil, it's AMAZING. The same oil can also be used as a chest rub for respiratory disorders and also as a preparation to apply to ulcers. It's soothing and relaxing for respiratory issues - brilliant for asthma and emphysema as well as bronchitis. Traditionally the leaf was boiled in milk and used for TB!
It's Herbal Medicine week! Coming soon will be the announcement of details and date for the new herbal first aid course taking place towards the end of July! :-)

Elderflower (Sambucus nigra)- these beautiful star shaped creamy flowers are appearing now, just ready for creating remedies to help with upper respiratory catarrh. If you dry the flowers, you can add 2 teaspoons to 1/2 pint boiling water and leave for 5 mins or so. Add a bit of lemon too if you like. Drink it hot before bed! I'll be making an elderflower lotion for my tired eyes too! as well as cordial for my girls. Elderflower is amazing for soothing the skin and is often used in face cream and hand cream lotions. It's a busy time once elderflower season starts, but be sure not to over pick, so that there are still plenty of berries come the autumn time.

Sitting with Apple Mint a lot at the moment. One of our most loved pungent herbs for sure. My mood has been sinking a little over the last few days, mostly from staying up too late trying to carve space for myself once the littlies are asleep. Just soaking up the scent of mint gives me energy! It's a real refresher. I also have a fair amount of congestion going on, the round of summer colds have reached me. Putting mint leaves in a bowl of hot steaming water and hanging my head over is giving relief. One of my daughters has digestive issues and is naturally drawn to Mint tea, I put about 3 teaspoons of cut fresh mint into a mug of boiled water and leave to infuse (covered) for 10 mins. Works wonders..

Nettle Infusion. Nettles are a wonderful food and so nourishing. However, they can also be used to help prevent uric acid build up in the joints, beneficial for gout, and infusions are also helpful for conditions such as arthritis, hayfever & anaemia as well as high blood sugar. Use dried nettles and put about a ounce of chopped leaf intoo a litre jar and pour boiling water over. Leave to steep overnight and strain. Drink a couple of cups a day, the infusion will last a couple of days in the fridge. They can be used every day. Any that has not been consumed, can be used as a hair rinse! ;-) They are a diuretic BUT due to their high mineral content, they do not deplete the body in the process.

We were in Gortahork today singing the praises of the wonderful, diverse range of herbs and spices we have available to build good health. We had cardamon coffee, Borscht, nettle infusions, chewed on dandelion roots and marvelled at the red oil created by infusing st John's wort flowers. Great to have such an engaging group of folks. Thanks OURganic Gardens for the invite!
