A family run organic farm on the shores of Lough Key.  Try our Dexter Burgers & food from the farm at the Drumanilra Farm Kitchen, Boyle. We moved our young family back home to Ireland from the UK in 2012, to realise a long-held dream of reviving the 200 year old 40 acre family farm in Roscommon.  The Tonra and O’Farrell families were originally tenant farmers to the Rockingham Estate on Lough Key.

The farm is just outside Boyle, on the brow of a hill, with fields rolling down to the Lough Key lakeshore.  The name Drumanilra – Droim an Iolair means “Brow of the Eagle” and is the old townland name used on older maps, presumably referring to a time when an eagle population still existed in the area.

We achieved full Organic Status in May 2015.  We raise rare and heritage Irish breeds outdoors, and keep stocking levels low so that animals have plenty of room to free-range.  We specialise in Dexter Cattle, Jacob and Shetland Sheep and Berkshire and Tamworth Pigs.  We raise organic geese and turkeys for Christmas and have a free-range, organic laying flock.

We love good food and have a wish to raise our children to know and respect good food and where it comes from, to respect the animals and the environment that feed us, to take seriously our responsibility as keepers of that environment, and above all to know when something tastes good!

In the Summer of 2014, we took our "Shepherd's Hut" style catering trailer to shows and festivals around Ireland. The Shepherd's Hut later became the Drumanilra Farm Kitchen and took up residence on Elphin St. in Boyle, next to Supervalu.    We serve heritage breed burgers and hot-dogs, handmade from Dexter Beef and Tamworth pork produced here on the farm, on artisan breads with salads also grown on the farm in our polytunnels.  We also serve breakfast, soups, hotpots, sandwiches & salads made from our own and locally sourced produce wherever possible.  We have indoor seating with a woodburner and children's corner, and a large garden with picnic tables and a sandpit for alfresco dining in Summer.  We also have a small farm shop where you can buy our organic meat, veg grown on the farm, home baking and other Irish artisan and locally sourced products.

We hope you'll pay us a visit!

Head in the Hedgerow by HB

We're getting excited about Boyle Arts Festival here at the Drumanilra Farm Kitchen! It's our one year anniversary: we served our first organic Dexter burger on opening day of the Arts Festival last year, so we're extra excited to be included on the programme as a festival venue this year. The artist, Hugh Barr, has been in hanging work in the cafe today, from his lovely series of paintings, Head in the Hedgerow by HB. The series features colourful pieces inspired by plants and flowers hidden in the hedgerows and will be with us all this week and next. We're also hosting poetry and prose readings on Saturday 23rd at 4pm in the cafe, with local author Gerry Boland, and poets, Elaine Gaston and Kate Dempsey, a real literary treat! We're open 10am for breakfast through to last orders at 6.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday throughout the festival, and have in-door and out-door seating and children's play areas. If you are thinking of dining with us before a show, you are welcome to bring a bottle or two in return for a small corkage charge. We can provide glasses and recycle the empties for you. We serve vegetarian and gluten free food as well as our signature Dexter burgers and steaks, and locally roasted barista coffee. All meats served at the Farm Kitchen and most of our salads, are organic and grown and reared on Drumanilra Organic Farm, 15 minutes away on Lough Key. We're giving away one free cup of organic tea, with any purchase and your festival programme, for the duration of the festival. We hope you'll pay us a visit while you're in town. Have a great festival everyone!

We are still recruiting and the role of Café Manager just got even more exciting!! If you are a Boyle local, you may have noticed building works at the Drumanilra Farm Kitchen on Elphin Street over the last number of weeks. Our organic Dexter burger bar has gone from strength to strength and it's been great to see so many visitors using the garden seating areas and play areas this Summer when the sun makes an appearance, and staying warm in-doors by the fire when it doesn’t! We have now extended seating to the back garden too, with a fun new playhouse on its way. And the opening of our new Deli and Farm Shop at the Drumanilra Farm Kitchen is now imminent!!! We have shiny new food prep rooms out back with lots of space for baking fresh bread and sweet things daily and for using our own-farmed organic meats, vegetables and salads to create delicious things for sale in the new shop. We are looking for an experienced Cafe and Deli Manager to help us manage our fast growing business and to work with our young and enthusiastic team. This is a full-time permanent position. You will manage operations and supervise shifts serving local, organic and artisan food. Many of our ingredients are produced on our own Drumanilra Organic Farm just fifteen minutes away on the shores of Lough Key. Our menu includes our signature Dexter beef burgers, hand-cut fries, barista coffees, speciality teas, salads, soups and weekly specials. The ideal candidate will have experience overseeing the operation of a successful café or deli, will be hands-on and passionate about artisan food and customer service, enthusiastic, proactive, flexible and able to work calmly under pressure at busy times. Barista experience and an interest in food and cooking are desirable. Approx. 35 hours a week including weekends. Opportunity to grow with a fast-moving business. Training and personal development. Staff meals and discounts. 4 weeks holiday + public holidays. Immediate Start. Apply with cv to jobs@drumanilra.ie or message us. Thanks!
