Bantry Marine Research Station
Description
Bantry Marine Research Station Ltd is a private marine research company located on the Sheeps Head Penninsula, 90km from Cork City. Bantry Marine Research Station (BMRS) has been in operation since 1991 as part of the Aquaculture and Fisheries Development Centre (AFDC), University College Cork. In late 2005 it was established as an independent commercial research station.
The station has a range of facilities including a fully equipped laboratory, pump ashore system, seawater filtration and treatment complex, tanks ranging from 400l to 8000l, and full hatchery facilities which includes broodstock tanks, larval rearing tanks, settlement tanks, and algal rearing units. In 2016 we opened a lumpfish hatchery on-site. We also have an aquaculture licence for a 6hectare seaweed farm.
BMRS is currently involved in a number of EU-funded projects including:
ODIN
SAFI
IDREEM
Full descriptions of these, and past, projects can be found on our website www.bmrs.ie

Calling all Young Algaeneers!!! This is the fourth edition of the exciting Young Algaeneers Symposium!! This edition will be touching on all aspects of applied micro- and macroalgal research!! It is a highly recommended symposium providing a platform for all young researchers to openly discuss their research with their peers!! You cannot miss this one - especially as it takes part on the beautiful Scottish coastline!!!
Spirits are high on the first day of the week despite being really cloudy and chilly!! Last week our Salmon (Salmo salar) trials ended, meanwhile we are preparing for new trials to begin shortlyl!! COLUMBUS event will take place tomorrow morning at European Parliament in Brussels from 1:20 pm until 4pm CET. The event is the last one from COLUMBUS project and will host the conference “Accelerating Blue Growth through Marine and Maritime Knowledge Transfer” has the aim of reflecting on the lessons learned in the H2020 COLUMBUS project in relation to stepping up Knowledge Transfer from European and national funded research and innovation projects in the marine and maritime sphere. Moreover, Julie Maguire will present Seabioplas project as an example of making bio-plastics with seaweed, a greener alternative to petrochemically-produced plastics. Actually, this method contributes to reduction of CO2 emissions and no fertilisers or pesticides are needed, sounds really nice!
