IF YOU ARE A SUNBED USER YOU MUST READ THIS! The truth about the tanning 1. Is indoor tanning the same as outdoor tanning? Yes.Your skin tans when it is exposed to UV light. An indoor tanning unit produces the same UV light as the sunshine outdoors. The difference is that indoor tanning is a controlled environment as where outdoors it can be difficult to judge the strength and intensity of the sun based on the time of year, the atmosphere, and your location. 2. How often should I tan and how long does it take to start seeing color? We recommend to start tanning every second day, skip a day than come every day. Everyone’s skin tans at different rates. People who tan easily will begin to see color in a few session, a very fair skinned person could take upwards of ten sessions to begin to see color (and not just freckles.) Then it is recommended they tan once or twice per week to maintain it. Our tanning professionals will help you with the exposure schedule that will best fit your skin type. 3.A hot bed will give me a better tan, right? No! Heat has nothing to do with the way a bed tans.. Your tan comes from the UV in the lamps, not the heat, that is just a by product. Each room has a cooling system to cut down on too much heat build up. We are trying to keep the customers as cool as possible, unfortunately, after several uses throughout the day, the beds do become hot. However, never confuse heat with tanning power, heat just makes you temporarily red similar to that of a hot shower. It is not any part of the tanning process. 4. Are goggles and lotion necessary? Yes! Yes! Yes! You must wear approved goggles EVERY time that you tan. Your eyelids are too thin to protect your eyes. The UV light penetrates into your eyes and can cause immediate and/or long term eye damage or vision loss. Lotion is so important to the health of your skin. Dry skin reflects light, moisturized skin absorbs light. Salon only indoor tanning lotions contain tanning accelerators to give you a quicker and darker tan, they also contain antioxidants and moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated, soft, and smooth. And yes. . guys you need to wear your lotion too. 5. I need to burn first before I can tan. No you don’t. A burn is damage! The sun burnt skin is injured and it dies and falls off (peeling). You can gradually tan without ever having to burn. Remember a tan is our bodies own natural SPF, and burning is always unnecessary and harmful. 6. What does indoor tanning have to do with Vitamin D? Your body reliably and easily produces vitamin D from sunshine, UVB specifically. Indoor tanning units emit UVB which mean you can make vitamin D in a tanning bed. Research has shown that tanners have a higher vitamin D blood level than non tanners. 7. Is Bronzer Lotion The Same As Fake Tan? No. Most accelerators with bronzers contain the same DHA (dihydroxyacetone) ingredients as self-tanning lotions, but in a smaller quantity, so the likelihood of streaking or patchiness is reduced. Prepare the skin for self-tanning by exfoliating prior to the tanning session. When using tanning accelerator lotions with bronzers you should exfoliate at least once a week to avoid bronzer build-up. Accelerators with bronzers are a great option for people who want to tan quickly, as they give an immediate colour boost while the natural tan develops. New generation bronzers contain very clever ingredients to give a 'bronzer' effect, without any DHA or risk of streaking from a quick application. 8. If I am on Medication, can it affect the way I tan? Yes. Certain types of medications, mainly antibiotics, can increase your sensitivity to UV light. We always recommend that tanners consult their Pharmacist or Doctor if in doubt. 9. Why does a tan fade? The “tan”, or pigmentation process, occurs in the epidermis, the top skin layer. The epidermis replaces all its skin cells every 28-30 days. Cells in the inner portion of the top skin layer divide themselves, migrate to the surface, gradually die and slough off. Skin cells contain melanin, and as a result of UV exposure, rise to the surface and flake off. Therefore, a tan can be maintained only by repeated exposure to UV light.
