AYURVEDIC CURE FOR MALARIA Ayurveda Malaria is known as Vishama Jwara. Malaria is the most common infectious disease of the world today. This is also the main variety of intermittent fever which has a tendency to return or recur again. It is transmitted by mosquito bites; it can spread very rapidly and become an epidemic. If treatment is neglected, Malaria can be a fatal disease - all over the world. A severe malaria attack has three stages: - It begins with a feeling of intense chill even if the weather is very hot and also the temp keeps rising in spite of the chill. - It comes on as the temp of the body rises. It begins with hot flushes which increase till the body starts feeling burning hot. Headache, dizziness, delirium and pain throughout the body may also be felt by the patient. - This stage begins when the fever has reached its highest point. It begins with very high sweating and the body temp gradually reduces. With the temp, the dizziness, headache and pain also reduce. The following medicines may be taken in meningitis: Siddha Makaradhwaja; Sauhhagya Vati – 240 mg of Sauhhagya Vati and 120 mg of Siddha Makaradhwaja may be taken two times daily with fresh ginger juice; Krishna Chaturmukha, Kasturi Bhairava and Vata Chintamani – 120 mg each of Vata Chintamani, Kasturi Bhairava and Krishana Chaturmukha should be taken three times in a day; Mahavishagarbha Taila – This should be used for massaging the back; Vishmushtyadi Vati,Talam Bhasma, Karanjadi Vati - 240mg of each of Vishmushtyadi Vati, Talam Bhasma and Karanjadi Vati to be taken with juice of tulsi leaves thrice daily; Sarjika,Sudarshana Churna, Sphatika - 500mg of Sarjika, 2gm of Sudarshana Churna and 240mg of Sphatika to be taken with warm water twice daily; Karanja Churna, Jwarankusha, Tala Bhasma - 500mg of Karanja Churna, 120mg of Jwarankusha and 240mg of Tala Bhasma to be taken with juice of tulsi leaves thrice daily; Shuddha Sphatika(alum), Mahajwaarankusha Rasa - 240mg of Shuddha Sphatika (alum) and 120mg of Mahajwaarankusha Rasa to be taken with juice of tulsi leaves twice daily; Sheetamani Rasa - 240mg to be taken twice daily with honey; Tuvrimallayoga - 60mg to be taken twice daily; Flesh of Karanja,Shuddha Sphatika, Godanti Bhasma - 120mg of each of Flesh of Karanja, Shuddha Sphatika and Godanti Bhasma should be made into six pills and taken at an interval of two hours. Apart from the above mentioned ayurvedic medicines there are also many potent herbs which are also useful for the treatment of malaria: - Afsanthin - Wormwood is taken to reduce the symptoms of malarial fevers on a daily basis. It should not be taken during pregnancy. - Amla or Amlaki - Gooseberry is the richest source of vitamin C and so it helps to replenish the loss of this vitamin through the symptoms of malaria. - Neem - Margosa Tree contains gedunin, which is very effective for the traditional cure of malaria, ie quinine. - Shikakai - Acacia an infusion of the leaves of the shikakai tree is useful in reducing the fevers caused due to malaria. Warning: The local treatment-medicine for malaria is provided as a supplement but not for substitute for professional medical examination (always consult a doctor). Improper treatment of malaria may lead to allied complications like anemia, dysentery, kidney failure and enchaphalitis, coma and other profound alteration of general condition. Malaria is a major cause of death in Africa and third world countries. Prevention from mosquito bites is very essential as this is the main cause of malaria. There should not be stagnant pools of water in the surroundings or they should be sprayed over with oil. HOME REMEDIES The main home remedies for the treatment of meningitis are lemonade, orange juice and other acidic drinks. One cup of soya bean milk mixed with 1table spoon of honey should be taken every night for three or four months. Diet: The diet of the patient is very important during the treatment of malaria. Initially, the patient should go on fast of orange juice and water for a few days, till the fever is severe. After the fever has subsided, the patient should take only fresh fruits for a few days. Milk can be added to this diet. Then the patient may start a well balance diet with emphasis on fresh fruits, raw vegetables and natural foods. Avoid intake of processed foods, refined and canned foods, as they don't have the necessary nutrients to keep the body healthy. Cold pack - apply cold pack to keep the temperatures down. Take a long sheet of cloth and dip in water and wrap it around the whole body. Let it stay for at least ten minutes and this can be done three times a day to get rid of high temperatures. Clean surrounding - should be kept clean. Water should not be allowed to stagnate as it provides an ideal breeding ground for mosquitoes. Make sure there is a mosquito net to prevent mosquito bites. Warm water - frequently during the day to cleanse the bowels system and to keep the body hydrated, which helps in proper functioning of the body. Basil leaves - juice of holy basil leaves bring down fever. Basil leaves contain two vital flavonoids named vicenin and orientin which protect damages to blood cells. In addition, holy basil leaves contains oils like cineol, estragole and linalool, which have vital anti bacterial properties. All these properties make it an effective home cure to alleviate symptoms of malaria. A decoction prepared by boiling leaves of holy basil and black pepper powder or powdered cardamom in half a liter of water is effective in bringing down body temperature. The decoction can be mixed with sugar to make it more palatable. Cinnamon - contains cinnamaldehyde which has mild anti-inflammatory and anti-spasmodic properties which help alleviate allied symptoms of malaria like loss of appetite, nausea, indigestion, cramps and spasms. Cinnamon provides relief from many allied symptoms of malaria. Coarsely powder one teaspoon of cinnamon , boil in water , add a pinch of black pepper powder and honey. Grapefruit - extract contains natural quinine substance beneficial for curing malaria. Boil a quarter of grapefruit and strain its pulp. This can be taken up to twice a day in addition to the normal course of treatment. Alum - should be roasted over hot plate and powdered, half a teaspoon of the powder taken about four hours before the expected attack and half a teaspoon every two hours after it, for relief. Fever nut - seeds are very effective home cure for malaria. About six grams of the seeds can be taken with a glass of water two hours before the onset of fever, and another after one hour of attack. Chirayata - is a natural analgesic and helps in reducing fever. An infusion made by steeping 15gms of chirayata in 250 ml of hot water and add cloves, cinnamon to the water, can be given in doses of 15 to 30 ml. Datura - leaves are very useful in the tertian malarial fever. About two and half new leaves of datura ,should be mixed with jaggery and taken as a pill two hours before the onset of fever. Lime and lemon - they are very useful home cure for quartan malarial fever. Three grams of lime must be dissolved in 60ml of water and juice of one lemon should be added to it. This mix should be taken before the onset of fever. Fenugreek seeds - have antibiotic properties helpful in treating malaria. The seeds help in building immunity and fighting malaria, this can be included in the diet to treat malaria. Dry and powder the seeds and mix in water to drink. Drink this mix for a week to get rid of malaria. Ginger - add ginger and raisins to one glass of water and boil this into a decoction and can be consumed ,after it cools down . Ginger root can be cut , a piece can be used with every 3 tablespoon of raisins. Solid foods should be replaced by a liquid diet. Green vegetables and fruits should be a major part of the diet and must be included in the post recovery stage. Spicy and fatty foods should be avoided. Cod foods in the diet such as cucumber, orange, watermelons, banana, papaya etc. should also be avoided. Beautiful thoughts and good health to all !

TRIDOSHA EXISTENCE IN HUMAN BODY A dosha is one of three bodily humors that make up one's constitution according to Ayurveda. These teachings are also known as the Tridosha system. The central concept of Ayurvedic medicine is the theory that health exists when there is a balance between three fundamental bodily doshas or humor’s called Vata, Pitta and Kapha. They may be considered to underlay the descriptions of personality temperaments in Ayurveda. The 3 main doshas (translated into as humor’s) are: - Vata (combination of the space and air elements), - Pitta (analogous to the fire element), and - Kapha (combination of water and earth elements). All bodily processes are believed to be governed by a balance of the 3 doshas. Whichever dosha appears to dominate a person's behavior and physique is called his constitution type. Each constitution type has particular strengths and susceptibilities. Tridoshas are considered similar to etiological factors responsible to derange normal health condition. For a description of humor’s (Vata-Pitta-Kapha) in traditional Greco-Roman and European medieval medicine, see the Four humor’s article. Vata, composed of space and air, governs all movement in the mind and body and must be kept in good balance. Too much vata leads to, "worries, insomnia, cramps and constipation. Vata controls blood flow, elimination of wastes, breathing and the movement of thoughts across the mind." Vata activates the nervous system, hearing and speech; and expresses as enthusiasm and creativity. Vata also controls the other two principles (Pitta and Kapha) and is usually the first cause of disease. Another word for Vata is Vayu - it is the more traditional Sanskrit word for air. Those who are classified as Vata tend to have lighter frames, and are either short or tall and thin. Their skin tends to be dry and cold with dark, thin hair. They have dark brown or grey eyes. Movements and speech are quick and sleep is light, interrupted, and fitful. Mentally, they are restless and have lots of ideas. They are creative and imaginative, but are fearful, anxious, and insecure. Vata doshas' corresponding colors are warm and gentle, such as yellow, ochre, or brown. Amethyst is the stone associated with Vata. Pitta is said to be composed of fire; it governs, "all heat, metabolism and transformation in the mind and body. It controls how we digest food, how we metabolize our sensory perceptions, and how we discriminate between right and wrong." Pitta must be kept in balance, too. "Too much Pitta can lead to anger, criticism, acidity, ulcers, rashes and thinning hair". A balanced Pitta mind makes one a good leader with a warm personality. Pitta types are generally average physically. They tend to have fine, soft, red or fair hair (though Pittas have been known to have dark hair.) Eyes tend to be blue, grey, or hazel. Their moods change slowly and they are busy people, usually achieving much in their lives. They are more intellectual and speech is clear, sharp, and precise. They are fiery, angry and judgmental. The Pitta doshas' corresponding color are cool, calming colors such as blue, green, or purple. Their stone is Moonstone. Kapha is the watery humor’s, consisting of the water and earth elements. Kapha cements the elements in the body, providing the material for physical structure. This dosha maintains body resistance... Kapha lubricates the joints; provides moisture to the skin; helps to heal wounds; fills the spaces in the body; gives biological strength, vigor and stability; supports memory retention; gives energy to the heart and lungs and maintains immunity... Kapha is responsible for emotions of attachment, greed and long-standing envy; it is also expressed in tendencies toward calmness, forgiveness and love. Too much Kapha leads to lethargy and weight gain, as well as congestion and allergies. Kaphas' body types are sturdier and thicker than the other body types. Hair is thick and lustrous and eyes are blue or brown. They have the best strength and endurance and have a slow, steady pace. Mentally they are calm, steady, and stable. They can be greedy and possessive but are caring and not easily irritated. Kapha governs bright, vibrant colors such as red, pink, and orange. Their corresponding stone is Lapis. According to Ayurveda, the site of the existence of Tridosha has been established by keen observers. Charaka, Sushruta and others have determined the locations in the human body where tridosha mainly exist. Bhav (Praksha) clearly locates the part of human body where Tridoshas are presents: - Vata: exist below the naval and lower part of body (horizontal line from naval to round back to naval). - Pitta exist in between the naval line and epigastrium line (horizontal line from xiphoidal process of sternum - epigastrium - to round back to epigastrium). - Kapha exist in the upper part of the body (above from the epigastrium line, including the thoracic cavity, upper limbs and head). Although the main site of Tridoshas is as described above, they work with each other in their respective functions to make equality and harmony in the smooth functioning of the body. Ayurvedic tradition they play a comprehensive role for accurate diagnosis and treatment of the human body.

Everyone has a doctor in him or her; we just have to help it in its work. The natural healing force within each one of us is the greatest force in getting well. Our food should be our medicine. Our medicine should be our food. But to eat when you are sick is to feed your sickness. (Hippocrates, Father of Western Medicine) Fasting is, without any doubt, the most effective biological method of treatment. It is the 'operation without surgery'. It is a cure involving exudation, re attunement, redirection, loosening up and purified relaxation. While fasting, the patient improves her or his physical health and gains much. But he or she will have neglected the most important thing if the hunger for spiritual nourishment that manifests itself during fasting is not satisfied. Fasting is by far the most effective method for purifying the blood, organs, and all bodily tissues, and in this age of pervasive pollution it is more important than ever in warding off premature degeneration of the body due to toxicity.

Pitta - u tankom crijevu, limfi, krvi i jetri. Vata - u debelom crijevu, kostima, zglobovima, spolnim organima, stopalima, nogama i anusu. U prirodi vata, pitta i kapha surađuju. Kiša njeguje zemlju vlagom (kapha). Uz pomoć sunca (pitta) sve biljke rastu i sazrijevaju.

Kroz izmjenu materija u organizmu stimuliše-razgradi masti u organizmu.

HOMOEOPATHY Homoeopathy was brought into India around 1810 A.D. by European missionaries and received official recognition by a resolution passed by the Constituent Assembly in 1948 and then by the Parliament. Homoeopathy is a method of treating diseases by administering drugs which have been experimentally proved to possess the power to produce similar symptoms on healthy human beings. Treatment in Homoeopathy, which is holistic in nature, focuses on an individual’s response to a specific environment. Homoeopathic medicines are prepared mainly from natural substances such as plant products, minerals and from animal sources. Homoeopathic medicines do not have any toxic, poisonous or side effects. Homoeopathic treatment is economical as well and has a very broad public acceptance. Homoeopathy has its own areas of strength in therapeutics and it is particularly useful in treatment for allergies, autoimmune disorders and viral infections. Many surgical, gynaecological and obstetrical and paediatric conditions and ailments affecting the eyes, nose, ear, teeth, skin, sexual organs etc. are amenable to homoeopathic treatment. Behavioral disorders, neurological problems and metabolic diseases can also be successfully treated by Homoeopathy. Homoeopathy can also be useful for de-addiction from drugs, tobacco and alcohol. Apart from the curative aspects, Homoeopathic medicines are also used in preventive and promotive health care. In recent times, there is an emergence of interest in the use of Homoeopathic medicines in veterinary care, agriculture, dentistry, etc. Homoeopathic medical education has developed in seven specialties in post-graduate teaching, which are Materia Medica, Organon of Medicine, Repertory, Practice of Medicine, Paediatrics, Pharmacy and Psychiatry.

SIDDHA The Siddha System is one of the oldest systems of medicine in India and is practiced in the Tamil speaking parts of India and abroad. The term Siddha means 'achievements' and Siddhars were saintly persons who achieved ‘results’ in medicine. Eighteen Siddhars were said to have contributed towards the development of this medical system. Siddha literature is in Tamil and it is largely therapeutic in nature. The Siddha system of Medicine emphasizes that medical treatment is oriented not merely to disease but has to take into account the patient, the environment, age, sex, race, habits, mental frame, habitat, diet, appetite, physical condition, physiological constitution, etc. This means the treatment has to be individualistic and ensures a low probability of incorrect diagnosis or treatment. The diagnosis of diseases in Siddha involves identifying its causes through the examination of pulse, urine, eyes, study of voice, colour of body, tongue and the status of the digestive system. The system has developed a rich and unique treasure house of drug knowledge in which use of metals and minerals is liberally made. Siddha medicines containing mercury, silver, arsenic, lead and sulphur have been found to be effective in treating certain infectious diseases including venereal diseases. The Siddha system is effective in treating chronic cases of liver, skin diseases especially "Psoriasis", rheumatic problems, anemia, prostate enlargement, bleeding piles and peptic ulcer. During the last four decades, there has been continuous development in Siddha medical education and this has led to the establishment of the National Institute of Siddha at Chennai an apex institute having six specialties in post-graduate teaching and training. These are Maruthuvam (General Medicine), Sirappu Maruthuvam (Special Medicine), Kuzhanthai Maruthuvam (Paediatrics), Gunapadam (Pharmacology), Noi Nadal (Pathology) and Nanju Nool and Maruthuva Neethinool (Toxicology).

UNANI The Unani System of Medicine, which originated in Greece and passed through many countries before establishing itself in India during the medieval period, is based on well-established knowledge and practices relating to the promotion of positive health and prevention of diseases. The Unani System has grown out of the fusion of the traditional knowledge of ancient civilizations like Egypt, Arabia, Iran, China, Syria and India. The system of medicine was documented in Al-Qanoon, a medical Bible, by Sheikh Bu-Ali Sina (Avicena) (980-1037 AD), and in Al-Havi by Razi (850-923 AD) and in many other books written by the Unani physicians. The Unani system is based on the Humoral theory i.e., the presence of blood, phlegm, yellow bile and black bile in a person. The temperament of a person can accordingly be sanguine, phlegmatic, choleric and melancholic depending on the presence and combination of humors. According to Unani theory, the humors and medicinal plants themselves are assigned temperaments. Any change in quantity and quality of the humors, brings about a change in the status of the health of the human body. A proper balance of humors is required for the maintenance of health. Treatment in Unani consists of three components, namely, preventive, promotive and curative. Unani system of Medicine has been found to be efficacious in conditions like Rheumatic Arthritis, Jaundice, Filariasis, Eczema, Sinusitis and Bronchial Asthma. For the prevention of disease and promotion of health, the Unani System emphasizes six essentials (Asbab-e-Sitta Zarooria):- (a) pure air (b) food and water (c) physical, movement and rest (d) psychic movement and rest (e) sleep and wakefulness and (f) retention of useful materials and evacuation of waste materials from the body. There are four forms of treatment in Unani medicine - Pharmacotherapy, Dietotherapy, Regimental Therapy and Surgery. Regimental therapy (Ilaj Bid Tadbir) is a special technique/ physical method of treatment to improve the constitution of body by removing waste materials and improving the defense mechanism of the body and protect health. The Unani system of medicine offers various methods of treatment which are used for specific and complicated diseases. It emphasizes the use of naturally occurring, mostly herbal, medicines and also uses some medicines of animal, marine and mineral origin. During the last 50 years, seven Post graduate specialties have been developed (i) Kulliyat (Fundamentals of Unani System of Medicine) (ii) Ilmul Adviya (Pharmacology) (iii) Amraz-e-Niswan (Gynaecology) (iv) Amraz-e-Atfal (Paediatrics) (v) Tahafuzzi-wa-Samaji-Tib (Social and Preventive Medicine) (vi) Moalejat (Medicine) and (vii) Jarahiyat (Surgery). National Institute of Unani Medicine is established in Bangalore to impart good P.G. education in Unani System.
