The Hospital is run by the Congregation of the Mission Sisters of Ajmer founded in 1911 by Bishop Henry Fortunatus Caumont, the first Bishop of Ajmer. On the occasion of the Golden Jubiiee of St. Francis Hospital it is imperative to go to the beginnings of the Institution. The Hospital is run by the Congregation of the Mission Sisters of Ajmer founded in 1911 by Bishop Henry Fortunatus Caumont, the first Bishop of Ajmer. He was assisted bit his sister, Mother Mary Matilda. Both were missionaries to the core. They came from far away France, with the specific purpose of rejuvenating the people of this part of India, through the Apostolate of Teaching and Healing.

The words of our Founder to the first members of the congregation on Foundation Day has been the beacon light for all those involved in making St. Francis Hospital what it is today. He stated "A Mission Sister should be a faithful messenger. a ministering angel. going every where on ready foot if not on swift uring, to do the Master's will, a vessel over flowing with love, to everybody all the day. serving God and doing good. Such will be her happiness".

Genesis Of The Hospital Venue

In 1899 the original building was purchased by Rev. Fr. Bertram from an American Methodist Foundation for St. Anselm's School, which was opened here and continued till 1904 when it was re-located to the present location. In 1911 our Founder took over the place for the purpose of housing the Sisters and their work. In need of wider open spaces. the Home of the Congregation was shifted to Mirshali, in 1934. giving the premises over to the Sisters of St. Mary Of The Angels, in which they opened St. Francis Nursing Home. Three years later, the little Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi took charge and continued the work till 1952, when they were called away to Africa.

In God's great plan we, the 'Mission Sisters were then invited to take over the Nursing Home on May 16th, 1952. We returned to our 'NEST' ceasing the opportunity to pursue the medical apostolate, in an organised way, through this 30 bed nursing home. Dr. L.Albuquerque was the resident doctor and Dr. Prim visiting consultant. For the MSA pioneering sisters, who were appointed in the hospital, the coming back to this venue, where they were nurtured was of deep significance and full of sentiments. With the advantage of being qualified and experienced nurses, they were able to launch out confidently on this, their given new venture. Two of them Sr. Veronica and Sr. Colette worked in positions of trust, at the renowned Windham Hospital, Jodhpur and Victoria Hospital, Ajmer. At the very outset, the two of them conceived the idea of a Nursing School. even though the resources were limited. They began with a training school for midwives. It was their determination and enterprising spirit which made their dreams materialize in leaps and bounds, over the years.

Gradually things began to happen. In January 1953 out of the blue an American Surgeon Dr. Van Allen arrived on the scene, offering his services and willing to donate his medical equipment. It was his coming, that helped the Nursing Home to be raised to the status of a Hospital Unfortunately, his was a brief stay, due to a certain mishap. The hospital however continued to function, mainly catering to maternity cases.
