Remember our post about the new Leighton Center? Maren Türschmied, student at the University of Würzburg and currently seeking a Master’s Degree in Regional History (M.A. Cultural Landscapes), is part of the organization staff and needs your help for her Master's thesis about good old Leighton! She also created a blog about the latest updates on Leighton Barracks Würzburg which is attached to the bottom of this post, too. Definitely worth checking out! "Hi there, I’m a student at the University of Wuerzburg, seeking a Master’s Degree in Regional History (M.A. Cultural Landscapes). I am working with the chair that hosted Prof. Riggs from Flagler College in Florida. He recently posted to this page about a panel concerning the installation of a potential research center for German-American relations in Wuerzburg. Following up on the positive outcome of this discussion I would like to conduct a survey addressing Americans who used to live/ work at the Leighton Barracks. You can find it under this link: https://www.surveymonkey.de/r/3XGXDMC To add some background information I have started a blog which I plan on running while writing my thesis (possibly even longer) – you can find it here: https://visitleightoncenter.wordpress.com I’d very much appreciate for you to share this information with the community. Please let me know if you have any questions or remarks. Thank you so much!!!" #leightonbarracks #leightonbarrackswürzburg #leightonbarrackswuerzburg #leightonbarrackswurzburg #würzburg #wuerzburg #wurzburg #landesgartenschau2018 #landesgartenschauwürzburg #hubland

- LEIGHTON NEWS - Contrary to what was said, the old fire department tower has been torn down as well. This had to happen for static reasons resulting from the planned multifunctional use of the building as well as for the accessibility, the installation of an elevator and oberserving the escape routes and other regulations according to the public relations office of the city of Würzburg. The tower will eventually be rebuilt and another storey will be added. Last Thursday, first steps have been made regarding the realization of a "Leighton Center". It is scheduled to combine museum and research center and will adress the German-American relations, especially in and around Würzburg. The organisators hope that the institution can open its doors during the upcoming Landesgartenschau in 2018. A temporary exhibition of a similar kind, taking place during the flower show, is already in progress. The concluding open forum expressed that the project will need YOUR help: The stories of veterans, their families as well as former civilian employees are essential for the "Leighton Center" to come to fruition. - LEIGHTON NEWS - Wayne Riggs, visiting professor at the University of Würzburg, just sent us some interesting news about good old Leighton Barracks Würzburg and the creation of a museum and educatitonal center about German-American relations in and around Würzburg: "I am happy to announce there will be a meeting to discuss the organization of the "Leighton Center" for the study of the German-American relationship. The time and place of the meeting are as follows: Donnerstag, 8. Juni 2017, 15:00 Uhr Forschungsstelle Deutscher Orden, Zimelienraum Oswald-Külpe-Weg 74, Hubland Nord For those familiar with the barracks, this is the old elementary school. It is our goal that the center be useful for those who are studying the relationship between Germans and Americans stationed here (particularly in Wurzburg) and for the public (residents of Wurzburg and American veterans and their families). In the end, we would like to have a teaching center/museum for the public (which would be a place for our veterans to visit), and a place for scholars who are studying the part of history. Anyone interested in this discussion is welcome to attend." #leightonbarracks #leightonbarrackswürzburg #leightonbarrackswuerzburg #leightonbarrackswurzburg #würzburg #wuerzburg #wurzburg #landesgartenschau2018 #landesgartenschauwürzburg #hubland

It's that time of the year again ... remember the original American ice cream, Rock 'n' Roll music and the delicious burgers? Yup, it's German-American-Volksfest time! Every year in May, thousands of people flocked to Leighton Barracks Würzburg (and the Giebelstadt airfield in earlier times) to experience a part of American culture in the middle of Germany. The festival paused only in 1986 (Libya crisis), 1981 (right after the first Gulf War) and in the years between 2001 and 2005 (aftermath of 9/11). Until 1969, the festival was more like a weapons exhibition; beginning with the year 1970, it transformed itself into a family event without any militaria. As you all know, the final Volksfest took place on April 27th, 2006.
