14th ACMAR 2017 has been characterized by the digitalization ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Annual Conference for Management Accounting Research (ACMAR) at WHU - Otto Beisheim School of Management has established itself as a regular spot for the international academic management accounting community. The conference, held in Vallendar on March 9-10, took place for the fourteenth time this year. Featuring three keynote speeches, parallel sessions, roundtable sessions, and a doctoral colloquium, the conference provided a platform for the community to discuss recent management accounting research. 150 professors, researchers, and doctoral students from around the world took advantage of this opportunity. Professor Erik Strauß presented a current working paper (co-authored by Stefan Grunwald-Delitz and Jürgen Weber, both WHU) entitled “Informal Controls for Governing Day-to-Day Interactions in Interfirm Collaborations: The Role of Interpersonal Influence Tactics”. In addition, he also discussed the paper “Feed-forward Control in the Design of Management Control System Practices: The ‘Positive Deviance’ Approach” by Hanno Roberts (BI Norwegian Business School).

Marjo Väisänen and Professor Janne Järvinen from Oulu Business School visited Universität Witten/Herdecke to work together with Professor Erik Strauß on a paper about "Overcoming the dualism of enabling and coercive controls". Company visit at Murtfeldt Kunststoffe GmbH & Co. KG Participants of the course “cost accounting” (Interne Unternehmensrechnung) had the chance to visit Murtfeldt Kunststoffe GmbH & Co. KG which is one of the world's leading manufacturers of slide profiles, chain and belt guides, chain tensioners, and custom machine parts made from abrasion-resistant glide-enabling plastics. The general manager of Murtfeld, Mr Detlev Höhner, and Dr Rüdiger Wollenberg (Head of accounting) provided fascinating insights into the role of cost accounting in managerial decision making and its growing importance for managing the daily business of Murtfeldt. Thank you very much for this great visit Mr Höhner!

SIM Automation Ltd + Deutsche Telekom AG @ Universität Witten/Herdecke ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Last week Mr. Sascha Biontino (Group Accounting & Customer Finance at Deutsche Telekom AG) and Mr. Fabian Limmeroth (Head of Accounting & Finance at SIM Automation Ltd) were guests at Universität Witten/Herdecke. As part of the course “Financial Accounting (Externes Rechnungswesen)” Mr. Biontino talked about “Das Prinzip der Fair Value-Bewertung in den neuen Standards IFRS 9, 15 und 16”. Furthermore, Mr. Limmeroth offered interesting insights into the role and importance of cost accounting as part of the course “Cost Accounting (Interne Unternehmensrechnung)”. We would like to thank Mr. Biontino and Mr. Limmeroth for the excellent presentations!

Next Generation CFO. conference at Heinrich Heine Universität Düsseldorf ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Due to his research on management control & digitalization Prof. Dr. Erik Strauß was invited to the panel discussion “Wenn Watson die Probleme löst: Wettbewerbsvorteile versus Risiken der digitalisierten Unternehmenssteuerung“ at the conference „NextGenerationCFO 2016“. About 700 participants attended the congress, which took place at the Heinrich Heine University in Düsseldorf. Prof. Dr. Erik Strauß presented the advantages and disadvantages of the digitalization of management control from a behavioral accounting perspective. In addition to Prof. Dr. Strauß, for example, Carsten Knobel (CFO, Henkel), Stefan Plewe (Business Solutions Lead – Business Intelligence, Coca-Cola) and Prof. Dr. Ulrich Lehner (supervisory board Thyssenkrupp AG) also attended as speaker.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: The seminar with Gabriele Haase (Haase Management Beratung) and Urs Stoller (former top athlete in tennis) on 9th and 10th of December has unfortunately been cancelled! We will inform you about an alternative date as soon as possible!
