Saarbrücken ist einer der ältesten Informatik-Standorte der Republik. Vor über 40 Jahren wurde die junge Wissenschaft an der Universität eingerichtet. Heute haben im Umfeld der Universität viele Forschungseinrichtungen der Informatik ihren Sitz im Saarland, zum Beispiel zwei Max-Planck-Institute für Informatik und Softwaresysteme, das Leibniz-Zentrum für Informatik sowie das Deutsche Forschungszentrum für Künstliche Intelligenz. Die Saar-Uni ist auch auf den Gebieten der Biomedizin und der Nanotechnologie führend. Das Helmholtz-Zentrum für Pharmazeutische Forschung Saarland, das Fraunhofer-Institut für Biomedizinische Technik, das Leibniz-Institut für Neue Materialien sowie das Steinbeis-Forschungszentrum Material Engineering Center Saarland sind nur einige der herausragenden Institutionen im Umfeld der Universität, die sich diesem Schwerpunkt widmen. Viele junge, kreative Firmen aus der IT- und Biotech-Branche haben ihren Sitz im Saarland. Der dritte Schwerpunkt Europa äußert sich vor allem kulturell: Der Anteil an ausländischen Studentinnen und Studenten ist an der Saar-Uni fast doppelt so hoch wie im Bundesschnitt. Viele Doppelabschlüsse, beispielsweise in Jura, prägen das Studienprofil der Saar-Uni. Im Projekt "Universität der Großregion" haben sich Universitäten aus Deutschland, Frankreich, Belgien und Luxemburg die grenzübergreifende Zusammenarbeit in Forschung und Lehre auf die Fahnen geschrieben.

Computer Sciences, Nanotechnologies and the Life Sciences (NanoBioMed – Life and Matter) as well as – essentially motivated by its location and history – Europe along with Linguistics, Culture Sciences, Law and Economics determine Saarland University’s profile. More than 40 years ago, the young science has been established at the University. Nowadays various scientific research institutes such as two Max-Planck-Institutes for Informatics and Software Systems, the Leibniz-Centre for Informatics or the German Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, are located in Saarland. Moreover, Saarland University is a leader in the research domains of Biomedical Sciences and Nanotechnologies. The Helmholtz Institute for Pharmaceutical Research Saarland, the Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Technology, the Leibniz Institute for New Materials or the Steinbeis Research Center for Material Engineering Saarland are only some of the excellent institutions located close to the University, which are dedicated to this core theme. Many young and creative companies from the IT- and Biotech industry have their headquarters in Saarland. The third focus area of Europe becomes primarily apparent in its cultural influences: The percentage of foreign students is almost twice as high as the national average. Several double-degree programs, for example in the Department of Law, shape the University’s profile. Within the “University of the Greater Region”, universities of Germany, France, Wallony and Luxembourg take up the cause of cross-border cooperations in research and teaching.
