I am glad that saddle sores I see here are not that bad. Still it makes me sick how people treat these poor creatures 😔 Satteldruck in Extremform, zum Glück noch nie hier so gesehen. https://www.facebook.com/princefluffykareem/videos/1527646467281157/

Think whips don't hurt horses? Think again . . . A study conducted by Dr Lydia Tong as part of a Catalyst investigation into whip use in racing showed that horses actually have a thinner epidermis (outer skin layer) than humans and a greater number of nerve endings in this layer. The epidermis is the outer, sensitive layer of skin through which we feel sensations like touch and pain. When racing whips were used on human subjects, they reported stinging and pain. Welts and bruising of the skin were observed and infra red photography indicated higher temperatures in the struck sections. The conclusion being that if whip strikes hurt humans, they are highly likely to hurt horses, especially when we understand that their skin (epidermis) is thinner and more sensitive. The catalyst article focused on horse racing, but the content is relevant for all equestrian sports. When used to train a horse using negative reinforcement, the whip is effective precisely because it hurts, (or if used lightly; frightens, irritates or annoys) the horse, as it motivates the horse to change its behaviour to avoid the discomfort (I will save discussion of the ethics of this for another post). However, the article raises the point that many riders don't understand the underlying principles of negative reinforcement needed to use the whip effectively as a training tool, and so it becomes an instrument used to inflict indiscriminate pain. So next time you reach for your whip, ask yourself whether it's use is really necessary and if you decide it is, take the time to learn how to use it effectively and minimally, to avoid hurting your horse. http://www.horsetalk.co.nz/2015/03/25/whip-use-horses-more-sensitive-pain/#axzz4l3cHkUAK Read the research by Dr Lydia Tong here: http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/download/Horse_Whipping_report_Dr_Lydia_Tong.pdf Watch the Catalyst episode here: http://www.abc.net.au/catalyst/stories/4201890.htm
