Sylvgheist Maelstrom : His Music influences can clearly be identified : Einstürzende Neubauten and Orphx, before anything else. This particular background is to be found in a new, reinvented form in Sylvgheist Maëlstrom's minimal industrial / ambiant music, the quality and originality of which led Julien (aka Sylmalm) to join influencial German record label Hands in 2012. In 1999 , he spent several months in Sweden to complete his studies in architecture. It was over there, in a country where nature's grandeur is everywhere to be seen, felt and experienced, that Sylvgheist Maëlstrom concept was born. And indeed, Sylvgheist Maëlstrom (litterally "the ghostly spirit of nature"), is for Sylmalm the artistic translation of wild nature claiming back its rights over civilization and mankind. Thus, at the core of Sylvgheist Maëlstrom project, one will find a sensitive reflexion about the cyclical nature of disasters and cataclysms, and, even more deeply maybe, a meditation on the impossibilty of escaping destruction and death. Resting on principles of mimimalism and repetition, Sylmalm's works tend to limit the amount of sound ressources and to ignore the notion of melody ; instead, a strong focus on carefully constructed, powerful rythmic patterns that invite to discover new mental landscapes. Sylmalm clearly links his way of envisioning music creation with the technics of abstract art in so far as the latter reveals the plastic potential of colors and shades in the creative process just as Sylmalm reveals the « plastic » potential of sound materials. Albums – Lahar, Skaftafell, Pripyat : a tryptic Lahar (2010 – Connexion Bizarre) was Sylvgheist Maëlström's debut album. It evoked the major volcanic eruption that occurred in Mount Saint Helen, a volcano located in the state of Washington, United States : on May 18, 1980, an important earthquake caused the entire weakened north face of the volcano to slide away, creating the largest landslide ever recorded. While an eruption column rose 25 kilometers into the atmosphere and deposited ash in several U.S. States, snow, ice and entire glaciers on the volcano melted, forming a series of large lahars (volcanic mudslides) that reached as far as the Columbia River, 80 km to the southwest ; they killing 55 people and destroyed everything on their way. Two years later, again in Mount st Helen, the same catastrophe was to occur again Following this first dark, minimalist and introspective opus, Skaftafell (2012-Hands) is an appeased and much more melodious second album. Resting on complex rhythmic combinations, dense and forcefull, it continues exploring the themes that are dear to Sylmalm : the forces of nature and their impact on human experience. Skaftafell was named after a beautiful icy mountainous region on the southern edge of the mighty Vatnajökull Glacier, Iceland. Rather than exploring the potential violence of nature over mankind, Skaftafell is the image of nature freed of all human presence, the noise of the tremendous and ever-moving glacier. In 2014, Sylvgheist Maëlström issues his third album, Pripyat (2014-Hands) , the success of which leads him to be invited to some of the most famous electro and techno german festivals like Maschinenfest and Forms of Hands. With this new opus, the third and last part of the tryptic project he started with Lahar, Sylmam focuses on industrial catastrophes, especially on the largest nuclear energy disaster in history, Chernobyl. Pripyat, a town nearby that had grown to a population of nearly 50,000 by the time of the catastrophe, was hastily and completely evacuated a few days after april, the 26th 1986. Once a beautiful place to live (at least by Soviet standards), Pripyat was changed, within less than a few days, into an abandonned, chilling ghost town, a ghost town still bearing today the strange stigmatas of the hasty departure of its whole population. It's in this eerie landscape of desolation that Prypiat immerges us into. The minimalism of the previous opus is here abandonned, Sylvgheist Maëlstrom adopting here a much denser musical language, made with precise and concise rythmic structures. Thanks to Manuel G Richeter (Xabec)'s mastering, Prypiat forms a sound collage made with heavy rythms going crescendo aiming at taking the listener to what Sylmalm calls a state of « industrial transe ». Collaborators and friends... It's important for Sylmalm to point out that Lahar, Skaftafell and Prypiat are all three the result of long-term artistic dialogues with collaborators and friends : Flint Glass, Dither and OTX ; Herman Klapholz (Ah Cama-Sotz) and Manuel G.Richter (Xabec) for masterings ; Herald Finster and Bertrand Robion, Mathieu Orioli and Am&in for pictures and design. By the way, since 2011, Sylmalm has been organising each year an industrial techno festival in Paris, « FDLMEI ». With this particular project and thanks to the help of his brother Sebastien, light technician and video artist, Sylvgheist Maëlstrom has acquired a new visual dimension. Symalm's music and the themes it explores are thus extented in the images Sebastien constructs and desconstructs during the live performances, in absolute echo of his brother's sound explorations. This new work pattern was for instance showed with great success during Machinfest 2014. Sylvgheist Maëlstrom is now working on a fourth album that is to be issued on german label Hands in 2016. Sylvgheist Maelstrom perform on Saturday, 12th of November. teaser :https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TRWcZZUu5Y event :https://www.facebook.com/events/600702123428099/ tickets : www.lauterkrach.com
