Material Innovation – the Kombucha SCOBY.

Dealing with innovation potential means being open to experimentation. Our latest example: How can Kombucha be used as a sustainable raw material over and above being used in wellness drinks? The basic setup: Kombucha is a mixture of different yeast mushrooms and needs only sweetened tea in order to grow. It is indeed very practical that the colour of the fully grown mycelium can be controlled via the type of tea used. Its size is defined solely by the receptacle in which the mycelium grows. After the final size is reached, the mycelium is dried, producing an end product resembling parchment. Despite the fact that the mycelium will dissolve again upon renewed contact with water – even now there are experiments being done in the fashion industry for use with jackets and boots. In addition, the pharmaceutical industry is expecting new added value in areas of application regarding wound closure and artificial blood vessels. So the Kombucha mycelium can do more than just wellness – perhaps even in the context of experimental development in design. We’ll keep you updated!
