"A rare bird in the lands and very much like a black swan," which was presumed not to exist. We succeeded in translating another article on the Motobu-ryu blog! Enjoy! 💡🔐📖

+++💡Thanks everybody for the overwhelming feedback!💡+++ Here's an overview with links to Amazon print editions. The pages are still being built up so it might still take a while until can order. A KINDLE edition will also be available soon and - naturally - will be cheaper than the print edition. So you might want to wait on this. 🔶💎💰 Please note that this is a short work. However, it contains Motobu Choki's writing as an authentic text corpus 🎓 in English. A number of commentaries separately follow the corpus. There is also an index which includes Japanese Kanji and Kana, and - at the same time - serves as a glossary of terms. 🔎💡 While so far no authorized translation of it has had been published (there were requests, though), this little work here was created with the unreserved advice, explanation, and translation of Motobu Naoki, Shihan of Motobu-ryū (Daidokan Motoburyu) and grandson of the author. 🎩🎌🎯 Again, it is short but sweet! That's the way we like it, I think. 😌 PS: Don't forget to give me a rate ↗ at Amazon.

My little book about Matsumura Sokon's handwritten scroll is back in store. It now includes the rare photography of the original scroll, which necessitated approval by the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum as well as the owner of the scroll. Please enjoy, like it, share it, and give it some stars in your customer review. Note that the link is Amazon US, so you might want to change to your respective region. Thanks Andreas

With the next installment of the "Ōshima Hikki" I succeeded to establish the DOB of Shiohira Pēchin, details of five sailing voyages he made, as well as the fact that he had often sailed to China where he visited Fujian several times, and went to Beijing twice. Plus, what clothes he wore and the like :D

It would be a mere rethorical question to ask if historical Ryūkyūan combative methods were influenced by the outside world. Notwithstanding, somehow this seems to be a weird question. One of the persistent beliefs making Ryūkyūan combative methods so likable is the notion of their perceived immaculate conception, so to speak, unrelated to serious topics like soldiers, or war. While Chinese influences are considered fully acceptable. Japanese influences prior to 1879 already blow a breach through the atomic lattice of the community. But what about 19th century Western influences?

Today I scratched and scraped off a 50 year old paper slip to get closer to a secret... A secret related to what Urasoe, Sueyoshi, Sesoko, Soeishi, and Shiishi no Kon have in common. And what not.

Sueyoshi no Kon - Note that some of the main Okinawan Taira lineage schools do not practice this kata. In one of the main Taira dojo they asked a friend and sensei of mine to show the kata to them, which they then filmed. In other words, they don’t know it and have no personal tradition in it.
