Coop Design Research
Description
Design Research in coop. with Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences and Humboldt Universität Berlin
www.coopdesignresearch.de Master of Science Program
Design research in cooperation with the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation (www.bauhaus-dessau.de), the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences (www.afg.hs-anhalt.de) and the cluster of excellence Image-Knowledge-Gestaltung of Humboldt Universität zu Berlin (www.interdisciplinary-laboratory.hu-berlin.de).
More than any other institution, the Bauhaus Dessau expressed a modern understanding of design that took a sceptical view of antiquated design traditions and substituted these with direct research into materials and the innovative potentials of technology and science. Since then, design has been perceived as a cooperative discipline that synthesises diverse aspects of knowledge. From Autumn 2014 for the first time the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation and Anhalt University of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the transdisciplinary research cluster Image-Knowledge-Gestaltung of Humboldt Universität zu Berlin will offer a Masters Programme, which will engage with the Bauhaus’s legacy in design research.

Learning by Doing... also practically!
Lecture Tom Fischer on Nov 16, 5:00 p.m. at Studio Designing an Empirical Design Research PhD Abstract Underlying this presentation is the assumption that doing a design PhD can be significantly more challenging than doing a PhD in other fields. This is because several important concerns of design are quite different from key concerns of (empirical) scientific research, which defines the format of most PhD theses. This presentation will discuss these differences as well as challenges that arise from them. Then, a strategy to overcome the challenge of the design PhD will be presented based on two models from the area of systems and cybernetics: Gottlieb Frege's Epistemological Triangle and Robert Rosen's Modeling Relation. The latter has been proposed as a prototypical template and criterion for scientific work. This presentation will take a new approach to this model and explore how it can be disassembled and approached somewhat as a construction kit to arrive at design research projects that stand up to scrutiny both from the design and from the scientific perspective.
