On opposite sides of the world, Bonaire in the Caribbean and the Faroe Islands in the North Atlantic are two perfect examples of how island nations can combine renewable sources such as wind, with the power and reliability of MAN engines to stabilise the grid and meet the population’s energy demands. Since its conception and throughout 2017, MAN Diesel & Turbo’s successful ME-GI engine has set a new industrial standard for two stroke propulsion engines aboard LNG carriers and container vessels, with over 200 engines ordered so far. A particularly significant milestone was when the company’s low speed ME-GI and ME-LGI dual fuel engines registered a cumulative total of 100,000 operating hours last December. As the industry continues to increase its momentum towards a maritime energy transition, MAN Diesel and Turbo look forward to continuing to utilise these engines’ capabilities.

Reflecting on last year, we are proud of a range of achievements within the two-stroke, dual fuel marketplace. Our ME-GI dual-fuel low-speed diesel engine continues to represent the culmination of many years of development work and offers shipowners and operators the option of using either HFO or gas – predominantly natural gas. In particular, an order from Knutsen OAS Shipping of 4 x MAN B&W 5G70ME-GI engines with EGR systems in connection with the construction of two 180,000 m3 LNG tanker newbuildings which is scheduled for completion in 2020 will transport cargo worldwide for two Spanish utility companies. We’re looking forward to another exciting year within this space across our international operations!
