Galerie Anhava was founded 1991. In 1997 it merged with Galerie Artek, a pioneer within contemporary art in Finland.

70-vuotias: Taidemaalari Marika Mäkelä ei aio missään tapauksessa jäädä eläkkeelle – ”Mitä minä silloin tekisin?”
Helsingin Sanomat kävi haastattelemassa 70 vuotta täyttävää Marika Mäkelää näyttelyn avajaisten aattona: ”Tämä on minulle näyttelyn tärkein hetki”, Mäkelä sanoo katsoessaan vierekkäin ripustettuja Indian Yellow- ja Mauve Blue Shade -maalauksiaan. ”Tässä vaiheessa on hyvä katsoa, että pääsinkö sinne, minne halusin.” Paljon onnea Marika!

MARIKA MÄKELÄ Pre-Language 6–30 April 2017 Welcome to the opening on Thursday 6 April at 5–7 pm! *** 'I pursue no objectives, no systems, no tendency; I have no program, no style, no direction. I have no time for specialized concerns, working themes, or variations that lead to mastery. I steer clear of definitions. I don’t know what I want. I am inconsistent, non-committal, passive; I like the indefinite, the boundless; I like continual uncertainty.' Gerhard Richter Marika Mäkelä (born 1947 in Oulu) wanted the above statement by Gerhard Richter as the motto of her exhibition Pre-Language. Mäkelä herself says: ‘It often seems to be forgotten that the essential thing about painting is painting. When artists work, it is obvious that they use their experiences, memories, knowledge and things they have learned – or they use them – to create something new. Painting is activity taking place completely on its own terms. The thinking of a real painter cannot separate itself from the material. The material also “thinks”, or at least has its own will. Painting, therefore, proceeds from the act, and the process of painting gives the works their unique visual visage. It is the result of a dialogue between – often partly unconscious – aims, pleasure, self-criticism, and the proposals or demands of the material. For the painter, this is a miracle that opens up the unique secret of the artwork.’ Marika Mäkelä’s manner of painting is precisely like this. She has something to say that needs to come forth, and can do so only through a completed painting. Sometimes, ‘when everything falls in place’, this can be easy, taking place as if by its own accord, while on other occasions it can involve a long struggle that will not necessarily end in victory for anyone. And then the painting will not be created. But it has now: many, unique, magnificent paintings! These paintings seem to be multi-sensory. You can climb, bathe, rest and find pleasure in them. You can feel their scent and almost hear them. And, of course, you can look at them, endlessly. Ilona Anhava
Gallery Talks: Heini Aho
Tervetuloa Heini Ahon taiteilijatapaamiseen sunnuntaina 2.4. klo 14.00. Aho kertoo The Square Elephant -näyttelystään ja taiteellisesta työskentelystään. Heini Aho (s.1979) yhdistää työskentelyssään kuvanveiston, installaation ja liikkuvan kuvan elementtejä teoksiksi, jotka käsittelevät tilaan ja ympäristön havainnointiin liittyviä kysymyksiä. Heini Aho on valmistunut Kuvataideakatemiasta 2015 ja Turun Taideakatemiasta 2003. Viime vuosina hänen töitään on ollut esillä yksityisnäyttelyissä, kuten Titanik-galleriassa Turussa, Forum Boxissa Helsingissä ja Small Projects Galleryssa Tromsössa. Lisäksi hän on osallistunut moniin ryhmänäyttelyihin, mm. Arena 1 Galleryssa Santa Monicassa Los Angelesissa, Or Galleryssa Berliinissä ja Helsingin Taidehallissa. Vuonna 2016 Aholle myönnettiin William Thuring -säätiön pääpalkinto. Taiteilijan teoksia on mm. Nykytaiteen museo Kiasman ja Saastamoisen säätiön kokoelmissa, Valtion taidekokoelmassa sekä yksityiskokoelmassa Belgiassa. Heini Aho on kansainvälisen taiteilijakollektiivi Videokaffen jäsen. *** Artist Heini Aho will talk about her exhibition The Square Elephant and her artistic practice at the gallery on Sunday 2 April at 2 pm. The event will be held in Finnish. Welcome! Heini Aho (born 1979) combines elements of sculpture, installation and the moving image into works addressing issues of space and perceptions of the environment. Heini Aho graduated from the Finnish Academy of Fine Arts in 2015, and the Turku Academy of Arts in 2003. In recent years, her work has been on show in solo exhibitions at the Titanik Galley in Turku, at Forum Box in Helsinki and at the Small Projects Gallery in Tromsö, among others. She has also participated in many group exhibitions, including at the Arena 1 Gallery in Santa Monica in Los Angeles, at the Or Gallery in Berlin and at Kunsthalle Helsinki. In 2016, Aho was awarded the main prize of the William Thuring Foundation. Her works are included in the collections of the Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art and the Saastamoinen Foundation, the State Art Collections and a private collection in Belgium, among others.
