https://www.haunted-dubrovnik.com/single-post/2019/04/10/Witch-trials-in-Dubrovnik Witch trials in Dubrovnik This is a part 1 on the link describing the first trial that occurred in Dubrovnik. The process is from the year 1660. This text will be followed by part 2, so stay with us to learn all about the witch trials of old Dubrovnik.
...A sinister prophecy was told by the aristocrat Vice Pucić. He warned Dubrovnik citizens that the end of the world was coming. Vice Pucić was our baroque poet who dealt with astronomy, math, physics and the occult sciences. After several months of listening to underground roars of varying strengths, Vice concluded that there would soon be a strong earthquake with the terrible consequences for the city. Nobody believed his warnings because he had also prophesied that he would not be among the living by the time when the cataclysmic earthquake occurred. All of it was fulfilled. The end of the world arrived on 6th of April 1667. Between 8 and 9 in the morning, a muffled thunder came from bellow the city and Earth started to shake violently... In just few moments in time, luxurious gothic and renaissance palaces, churches and monasteries were all reduced to a mournful pile of ruins. That was just the beginning...

As the carnival period officially started in Dubrovnik, I wanted to share pictures of some old grotesque masks of Dubrovnik that were very common back in time. They are: Turica (Marte in Italian; Mars) Čoroje (Italian Bacco; Dyonisus; Bacchus) Vila (Italian Diana; also fairy in Croatian; Diana) Bembelj (Italian Sileno; Silenus) Carnival used to be the time of fun, disorder, hedonistic pleasure and mischief, the time when everybody could become something else. In the old times, all the layers of society celebrated, the nobles organized masked balls, citizens gathered in merry processions through the city and it was the time when people in Dubrovnik were simply crazy! The sketches were published in the work of historian Francesco Maria Appendini - "Notizie istorico-critiche sulle antichità, storia e letteratura de’Ragusei", 1802. The source for pictures is "Leksikon Marina Držića" - local website dedicated to Dubrovnik playwright, famous Marin Držić and the Renaissance period of the city.

Following the link, you can read the story of the musical school in Dubrovnik. As I was studying violin when I was little (although my neighbors probably didn't like it), this place always brings memories. Somehow this is my favorite place in the entire old town. Inside, you can feel the peace and the energy of music that fills the air, you can feel the life of Dubrovnik from the past. Also, if you like classical music, check out compositions of Luka Sorkočević on Youtube.
