The Neretva River is the largest river of the eastern part of the Adriatic basin which stretches for 220 km in Bosnia and Herzegovina and for the last 30 km in Croatia. During antiquity, the Neretva was known as Narenta, Narona and Naro. Narona /nəˈroʊnə/ was the name of the ancient Roman city that was located in the Neretva valley. The Neretva delta hosts more than 20 endemic species, of which 18 are endemic to the Adriatic watershed, along with three endemic species in Croatia.
